Have you stayed at the Belize Grand Caribe?
We are planning a trip to Ambergris Cay and are thinking of staying at the Grand Caribe Belize Resort. Have you stayed there recently and what are the pro and con? Good location or not? Is it expensive to rent golf carts? We are a family of 3 adults that want to swim and snorkel. Any info appreciated. Thank you!

I've not stayed at Grand Caribe. I prefer being south of the bridge, just a personal choice. The property looks lovely.
Here's a link to golf cart rentals. Do note that some companies have prices in US dollars, and others are priced in Belize dollars.

Yes, I have stayed there and booked clients there. Its quite wonderful and a step up for the caye with a large pool, pool restaurant and bar, other restaurants in walking distance. Rooms are well done, large with good views of the sea and offers very good value for the $. Golf carts start at $60.00 per day and less for each day you rent. Taxi's are about $5.00 each way to town, plus bridge toll (for both taxi's and golf carts). Great choice, about one mile north of town.

I stayed at Grand Caribe in late June, and I've toured it a couple of times earlier. Gorgeous condo suites, arguably the most upscale on the island, with all the modcons like flatscreen TVs, and with sea views from every one. Beautiful pools.
I personally like the location, as it's within an easy golf cart ride from town, near several good restaurants (Aji, Lazy Croc and others) yet it's away from the hustle and bustle. Taxis do go here now, but they're not cheap -- BZ$35 (US$17.50) to Grand Caribe to or from anywhere in town. That does include the BZ$12 vehicle bridge fee.
On the down side I think the "restaurant" (more of a grill and snack bar) has the worst design it possibly could, like a cave. Although it's nice as a swim-up bar. Grand Caribe also is not very busy at times, as some of the other condotels have lower rates and get the business.

Can bicycles be rented? Any cheap form of transportation besides ones feet? Can you recommended another place that would be closer to town that is similar to the Grand Caribe? It sounds great, but the transportation cost seems HIGH, as it often is on an island. Thanks...

Look at the Phoenix, which is right in town. Really nice property, but, doesn't have much of a beach.
Also, maybe Xanadu, although it's older and probably not as nice as Grand Caribe.
Last time I rented bikes, they cost about US$5.00 a day. It's been several years though. I think Xanadu includes bicycles in their rates.
