Guatemala - where, what and how
My girlfriend is moving to Guatemala for 3 monthes starting in March. I'm going down to see her in April. I know nothing about Guate. What should we do and how should we get around? Two women with good smarts and keen desire. Were into nature but not into feeling like were going to be deserted or robbed any minute. Anything you can share...

Hi!
We have been to Guatemala about a dozen times as dental missionaries to the poor in various villages. We have also visited many cultural and touristy areas as sightseers. Will you be in the City, or are you going to visit your friend in another part of the country? There is such a wealth of culturally rich and interesting markets to explore, sample and taste! E-mail me directly, and I can give you some info if you are going to go to an area that we have previously been at. If I had to choose just one place to enjoy for a short visit, I would go to Antiguq--near to Guatemala City. It's TOURISTY, but ah!!!! so culturally rich.

I have been to GUA 2 times and I loved it. I took tour thru Clark tours they are near Boston. but if you have a friend there you can do tours down there. Go to Central market in Zone 1 also if you have chance take bus to Chichi and stay over nite and go shopping there also Antigua is nice for shooping and there are some fun and cheap bars there. have fun.

my husband and i wanted to see the mayan ruins in guatamala, but the state department travel warning sounds as if we will be murdered the moment we step across the border. does anyone have any practical experience traveling in guatamala who can give us suggestions? we are really interested in backpacking and camping- as for accomodations what about rural bungalows?

There are certainly many things to see and do in Guatemala. I recently traveled to the Mayan ruins at Tikal, which are among the most beautiful of all the major archealogical sites. While Guatemala City also has many things to see, it is so much nicer to get out of the city and into the countryside. Of course, it is wise to heed warnings and never travel alone at night in rural areas. While incidents involving tourists still take place from time to time, always exercise caution and use common sense. Try and learn some Spanish and you will be taken in by the locals as one of their own. The people of Guatemala are among the kindest I have ever met in my travels around the world. Don't let State Department warnings automatically prevent you from seeing one of the prettiest countries in the world. Enjoy yourselves and have a wonderful trip. <BR>
