Gautemala City to Flores

Can anyone provide some assistance with the following in relation to travelling from Guatemala City to Flores so I can visit Tikal.

Flights from Guatemala City to Flores- Is it best to pre purchase them on a site like Expedia or purchase when in Guatemala from a travel agent?? In other words is it any cheaper??

Or alternatively is a bus ride viable if time is not too much of an option??

And most importantly is it relatively safe ??

Thanks in anticipation..

Hi, there! I got a better price for that flight by going through a Guatemala agency; I booked ahead of my trip with the 1st of the 2 listed; they're both good.

The buses take 9-10 hours; night buses are popular, though not with me. I think it's a safe option, though. You could do a search on the Thorntree Forum for specifics:

I'm headed back to Petén for a few days in late July to tour less-visited ruins with archaeologist/naturalist Roxy Ortiz. She's amazing!

Happy trails!

TACA airlines has 2 flights per day at 6:30 AM and 6:20 PM for $160 including taxes.

Tag Airlines has one flight per day at 6:30 AM for $153.

Here's a Lonely Planet thread on the overnight buses: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntre...readID=2170274

walkabout -
Adrenalina got my ticket for $139 - cheaper than I could buy it online. The flight itinerary came through with a Rainbow Travel heading so they apparently work together.

Gary -

Not sure how far along you are in your planning, or where you are coming from, but it may work out better to roll your Flores flight into your flight to Guatemala City, in one itinerary, rather than splitting them up. Travelocity, Orbitz, etc are good at this.

For Tikal, stay in the jungle at one of the lodges - one or two nights. Someone from the lodge can pick you up at the Flores airport. If you possibly can, stay the second or third night in Flores. Very interesting little island with some good bars and restaurants.

Tikal is spectacular. Enjoy.

I used Adrenalina for bus travel in Guatemala. Nice to know that they can arrange flights too. And at a good cost.
