I am not specifically familiar with the Explorer II but did travel with Lindblad Expeditions to the Galapos a couple of years ago. This trip is generally very informal so anything comfortable is fine onboard the ship. The islands are all different but you will be hiking a bit so comfortable hiking shoes or sneakers and socks are a must. Additionally, because many of the landings from the Zodiac (motorized raft) will be "wet," you should have a pair of velcro Teva-type exercise sandals or a light pair of sneakers (for this purpose only and which you are willing to part with after the trip!) since there are often rocks in the water where you disembark. A small backpack (what's usually referred to as a daypack and 2 gallon size ziplock plastic bags (take smaller ones for your camera!)are great to have along so that you can take the wet sandals/sneakers off when you get on dry land and change into walking shoes.

I took Teva type but got off the Zodiac barefoot, waded in, wiped my feet on a boat's towel, and put on the Tevas. Worked perfectly. I don't like to rough it....can you tell!!!

Hi Philbill

I learned much from your Egypt trip report last year when you went to Egypt.

I went this past October for 3 weeks and posted a report also.

But your comments were helpful indeed.

About the foot wear, I wore sandal all the time while at the Galapagos.

I bought Tevas but had to return them because they pinched my foot. (!!)

Any good sandal with a good support around the ankle will be just fine.

The harder walking will be over the Lava Rocks... the rest is no more difficult than walking over the California ,Arizona desert.

A couple of young ladies on our tour wore simple beach flip flops !!! they were doing just fine.. amazing

I switched back and forth between Teva sandals and sneakers, both worked fine. When we had wet landings I would carry the Tevas and do like Philbill and dry off my feet and put them on.
Have a great time, I really enjoyed myself.
I went on the Galapagos Legend, so can't tell you about the ExplorerII but they mainly all land in the same areas.

We went to the Galapagos last November, and it was great experience!

I'd recommend sandals and sneakers or hiking shoes. We took Zodiacs to shore, and we had both wet and dry landings. We also visited populated towns and hiked a volcano, so be prepared for a variety of situations. I had Keen sandals, which were great, but I'd also recommend Chacos or Tevas.

Here is my review of the Galapagos (which also has links to all my other Galapagos/Ecuador trip reviews): http://www.epinions.com/content_214393130628

I have a huge online album of photos, which I would be happy to share. If you are interested, drop me an e-mail, and I will send you the link.

Just got back from the galapagos on the Letty (a 20 passenger boat). Wore my Keen sandals (Newports but not the H2 model) for all the wet and dry landings. They were fantastic and the envy of the other 17 passengers who didn't have them. Quick drying, excellent toe protection, good support, good for galapagos type trails and didn't seem to suffer from salt water immersion. I wore them for the landings and then hiked in them. Wore them on the boat also.
