Flights to Manaus from US

Hello.
A couple of friends and I are planning a trip to Brazil over Thanksgiving week (late November). We would like to go to the Brazilian Amazons and Rio/San Paulo area. Ideally, we would like to flight from U.S. (New York and Chicago) to the Amazon (Manaus), then fly from Manaus to Rio or San Paulo. I have search online but can not find airlines that fly into Manaus without stopping by Rio or San Paulo. The idea is not to track all the way south to Rio/San Paulo, then north to the Amazons, then back south before returning to the States. Can anyone help?

Thank you.

I don't know for sure but why don't you try looking into flying into a country north of Manaus or closer to it than Sao Paulo. Then take a connecting flight which may be shorter distance than going all the way down to Sao Paulo .

I would wager that Manaus handles only domestic flights. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that GIG and GRU are the only Brazilian international airports (i.e. airports with customs and immigration facilities).

Here is some more info, maybe you already know:

You'll want to check out the air passes available from the Brazilian carriers (TAM, Varig, etc).

You picked a good time to go to Rio, I think. I went for a week last year coming home to D.C. on Thanksgiving Day. The air ticket cost $421.

You will need a visa. Yellow fever shots may be in order if you go into the Amazon.

I checked travelocity and couldn't find any nonstops between Sao Paulo and Manaus or from GIG (Rio) to Manaus, so it is a 5 or 6 hour trip with connections.

There are domestic airports in both cities, closer in than the international ones. CGH (Congonhas) in Sao Paulo. Don't know the downtown airport in Rio.

We are planning to travel through Guyana and northern Brazil in late November /early December; including Manaus. Our intention is to fly direct from Toronto to Georgetown, Guyana. One of the charter airlines is offering flights but has yet to post their $ for the weeks we want to fly.

United Airlines flies from Miami to Manaus. You can probably book your flight to Rio/Sao Paulo with a stopover in Manaus. We did this flying from Canada through Miami with a stopover in Manaus and then carried on to Southern Brasil.

Really? I just checked united.com for one-way MIA to MAO each day from Sept 7 thru 14 and all of the options included connecting through Sao Paulo or Rio.

But, at travelocity, I see an American Airlines flight from MIA to Bogota that connects to a Varig flight to Manaus. I guess it does make sense that there would be international facilities at MAO to service the northern S. America regional traffic.

Currently there is only 1 airline flying direct into Manaus from Miami and that is LAB - Lloyd Aero Boliviano. They fly twice a week.
I prefer flying Varig to Sao Paulo and connecting to their flight up to Manaus.
Have been flying that route for many years -- and find the flight from Sao Paulo to be relaxing, as much of it is over the rainforest. I enjoy seeing the Meeting of the Waters while flying into Manaus as well, something you will not be able to see on the night flights.

This just in:

New Miami-Manaus flight on TAM Airlines

Starting October 25, a new non-stop flight will be available from Miami to Manaus every Saturday, operated by TAM Airlines on new Airbus 330.

This new option will allow people to visit the Amazon without going to Sao Paulo.
Here are the flight details:

Saturday: Departs Miami: 7:30AM
Arrives Manaus: 12:45PM

Saturday: Departs Manaus: 1:45PM
Arrives Miami: 7:00 PM
