February trip to Mayan Riviera

Hello Forum Friends,

My husband and I are planning a trip to the Mayan Riviera in February for a wedding. Afterwhich we will stay a few days to sightsee. We have never been there before. We are in our early 50's; enjoy snorkeling and visiting new places like historical sites and quaint towns. We are not big on high adventure.

I was hoping that someone could give me advice on my as of yet unconfirmed itinerary.

We don't want to drive in Mexico so we are planning to use taxi-cabs and visit sites through tours.

Day 1- We booked a week at a time share between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen but will arrive a day earlier and stay the first night in an airport hotel. I thought that we might be able to take a cab to the beach area but haven't explored any options yet. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Day 2- We will arrive at the time share and possibly explore some of their many large pools or take a cab to Playa del Carmen.

Day 3 - Wedding north of Puerto Morelos at 4:00PM. MIght explore Playa del Carmen in the AM.

Day 4 - considering either taking the cab and ferry for a day trip to Cozumel or booking an excursion through Cancun Discounts to Aktun Chen. We would probably not do ziplining but snorkeling in the cenote sound interesting but I'm thinking that it might be very, very cold water. OR Cozumel sounds like a nice day. We would possibly visit the town and maybe go to the beach. Comments and advice is appreciated.

Day 5- Book a trip to through Cancun discount which includes a visit to Tulum followed by snorkeling.

Day 6 - Another tour through cancun discounts to Chichen Itza and Valladolid.

Day 7 - leave for home.

Thanks in advance for any knowledable advice from people who are familiar with the area.

No need to stay near the airport unless your flight is REALLY late, Puerto Morelos is only a 20 minute drive from the airport.

Use a private transfer, taxis from the airport are really expensive, they have to pay an extra fee to pickup passengers.

You can visit Tulum on your own, take a colectivo (white shared vans) to PDC and there you have to change to another colectivo south to Tulum. You can hire a guide at the ruins entrance, fees have to be paid in pesos. Then afterward, take a cab to one of the Tulum beach clubs. I like Ziggy's beach club next to Cabanas Tulum, they have 2 for 1 drinks from noon until 6pm. Free use of beds and loungers if you eat or drink there. Clean restrooms.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. Well the one thing that I already booked was airport hotel because I am arriving one day before my timeshare reservation starts. Consequently, I am trying to figure out what to do in Cancun on the first night.

I will consider the possiblity of doing Tulum on my own. The one thing I like about the tour is the fact that it feels more secure since everything is already planned out in advance. Mexico scares me a little.

I really appreciate your input. It helps me to solidify my plans.

I understand your concerns, I have traveled solo to Akumal (you should visit here for great snorkeling) the last 3 trips and that area is very safe. So if you want to take a tour, fine, otherwise consider taking a taxi if being in shared van makes you too nervous and you can hire a guide at the entrance (they speak various languages so no problem there).

Then as stated you can take a taxi to the Tulum beach zone (the beach at the ruins is very crowded) or consider visiting Akumal and snorkeling there, have lunch at the Lol-Ha beach bar with toes in the sand. Have a great trip!

Great suggestions. However I still want to work with a tour. It makes me feel more secure especially since I do not speak spanish. However, I think I will change the snorkeling tour company to Edventure with an additional package to Tulum. I heard great things about them on this forum and I believe they go to Akumal.

The Edventures tour also includes a trip to the underground River Cenotes of Dos Ojos. That helps me decide to skip the trip to Aktun Chen and spend the day in Cozumel.

Thanks for your ideas.
