driving from mexico city

We want to drive to Cuernavaca, onto Queretero, then Patzcuaro, then Morelia where we will do the monarch butterfly trip. Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks, Paula How difficult is it to get out of airport?

Others may disagree, but for the type of tour you are proposing, I would rely on buses and hiring a driver and car. The bus system is excellent, and you really don't need the hassle of a car in Mexican cities. Or, if you prefer, you could hire somebody to drive you on each leg--it might cost US $60-$90 to be driven to Cuernavaca, for example, and this would be far easier than figuring out how to rent a car and driving in Mexico. I am ALWAYS glad I'm not driving when touring in those cities and mountains!

Heed Marilyn's advise, especially if this is your first trip to Mexico.

I would not be so hesitant about renting a car. Getting out of Mexico City was confusing but, once out, the traveling was fine. There are good toll roads in many places and, off the toll roads, there are great opportunities to see the country and stop at places you see. The areas you contemplate going to are easy to reach. We rented a car at the airport and immediately drove out of the City. On our return, we drove to our hotel, unpacked and I then returned the car to the rental agency. Absolutely no need for a car in Mexico City. But in other places you want to go to, a car can be quite useful. Good luck.

Actually I agree with all the above posts. There are merits to taking the excellent buses and likewise, driving. It depends on the kind of traveler you are. As noted, if it is a first time to Mexico driving might really be a challenge, and you will have do deal with issues like finding secured parking wherever you stop. On the other hand, to go to Cuernavaca you skirt Mexico City and the driving is doable on route and in Cuernanvaca. Either way has its merits- rent a car, possibly some hassle but lots of freedom, take the bus- generally excellent service on firt class lines, but your can't turn off the road and explore something if you want.
