Don't book tours with Mayawalk Tours in Belize

We have had a horrible experience with Mayawalk Tours in Belize. There have been 3 seperate incidents that now make me and my travel partner believe that they are scammers.

1. Pickup from the airport: Mayawalk offered to pick us up from the Belize Municipal airport, give us a tour of the Belize Zoo, and drive us to our hotel in San Ignacio for cheaper than our hotel. The man who picked us up, Tony, was nice, but his car was not. There was no air conditioning, it overheated and we had to stop a couple of times to put water in the radiator, and it was so slow that the public bus passed us on the way to the zoo. I had thought that maybe this just was the way it was in Belize, but it is not. Hotels pick you up in nice air conditioned vehicles. There was no tour of the zoo. He dropped us off and worked on the car to try to keep it from overheating, and we toured the zoo ourselves.

2. Overnight ATM Experience: We booked the overnight ATM experience with Mayawalk, one of two companies that offer it, for a Friday and Saturday. When we stopped by the Mayawalk office in San Ignacio on Thursday night to confirm, they said that they were "just going to call us" because they needed to reschedule the overnight excursion because of a "personal issue". We moved our other activities around and rescheduled it for Sunday/Monday. On Saturday night they called us at the hotel and told us that "the government canceled all overnight tours of ATM" because of the tropical rainstorms. We have since learned that this was not true.

3. ATM Tour: Mayawalk offered to take us on the ATM tour the next morning, and that we should be ready at 7:20 am SHARP to beat the other tour groups to the cave. They never showed up at our hotel. They never called the hotel or my cellphone to tell us that they were not coming. We learned from another tour operator that tours of ATM were cancelled because of flash flood possibilities.

We have since learned that Mayawalk has a habit of running their business this way. Do not schedule any activities with Mayawalk. There are other tour groups in San Ignacio that offer all of the same tours as Mayawalk.

I am quite sorry you had this unfortunate experience. I would ask you report this to [email protected], our govt tourism agency and if you pre paid via credit card, you can stop payment. There are other very good and reliable tour operators who offer ATM; Pacz is one and they will not dissappoint.

Sorry to hear. I've noticed you've posted this on other forums. Have you posted it on trip advisor yet? They get some horrible reviews.

Sorry that they did that to you; they sound incredibly unreliable.
