Crime in Puerto Vallarta
My family and I have been going to PV 1-2x yearly for about 10 years. We are going for 10 days 12/23/09 to enjoy the Christmas and New Year holiday. We went the day after Christmas last year and stayed through New Years. We had a blast!! Big fun! When we told our relatives we were going back again, they started lamenting about the crime. First of all there is no crime free location on earth that I know of (well maybe in Antartica 
PV is a big city and they have crime. We live in Chicago and walking in some of our neighborhoods pose a huge risk. You take the proper precautions but you can't live in fear. With that said, since the economy took a downfall and H1NI flu publicity, does anyone have any feedback to share regarding PV crime?

Puerto Vallarta is still nearly crime free and compared to the cities of the same size in the US and Canada, it is amazingly safe!
People hear the word Mexico and then they spout off bad information about crime/H1N1 and a ton of other things without realizing Mexico is a HUGE country! and that most of their information is incorrect and not first hand, to say the least.
Besides, most people who say Mexico is so ba/unsafe/blah blah blah have never been there, let alone to Puerto Vallarta.
And, as far as flu goes, H1N1 or other, there are at least 1000% more cases north of Mexico than in Mexico and Vallarta is warm, flu doesn't like warm weather so chances are less likely to get it here.

If you've been going to Vallarta on a regular basis for a decade, nothing has changed in the past year regarding crime. I'm going to guess those relatives don't go to Mexico themselves but were being influenced by media hype and not even specific to PV?

Stewbear you are absolutely right!! I wanted to send my family members additional confirmation that PV is safe. Thanks to all of your responses. Suze and Ladygogo you guys are great too! I can't wait to party down in PV again. I feel like it is my 2nd home.

Well I do believe there's the tiniest bit of rise in petty theft. I hear of more a wallet being stolen from someone on the beach, and that kind of thing more than you did a decade ago. But I think it's just as a city grows and tourism develops, those things (unfortunately) may follow. But it most definitely is not about anything major like kidnapping, drug cartels, swine flu, whatever your relatives are thinking, and nothing that's changed in the last year or two.
