Cozumel vs. Playa del Carmen

Considering a Mexican vacation in 2002. My husband would like to dive in Cozumel, however, I only just learned to snorkel. We've been to Cancun and are interested in trying someplace new. Which would be best, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, or other? Also, any recommedations for a nice resort (not all-inclusive). Any suggestions you may have are appreciated!!

Been to both several times and like both, although I'm very partial to Cozumel. Snorkling is much better there. We've split our time between the 2 places a few times and that's always been very good. You're only 45 minutes or so by ferry. You could spend a few days in Cozumel, then take the ferry to Playa del Carmen for a few days.

Sue, I would like to recommend several places in Playa del Carmen: the El faro, the Hotel Colibri or the Porto Real. All three nice and all at different price ranges(all on the beach)the Colibri and El faro are nice because they are small only about 25 rooms at each. Good luck!

Susan is absolutely correct. Diving AND snorkling will be better in Cozumel. Stay there and take the ferry to Playa Del Carmen after a few days.

I recently found this site: www.travelgavel.com. It's an auction site - but the dates of available travel are far enough out that you can do your planning for 2002. I've seen Cozumel all-inclusives on the site - and also Playa del Carmen. it's new, so there don't seem to be many bidders right now. (low winning bids!) Might save you some *real* dollars.
