Could we do both in 11 days? Ixtapa/Zihuatenaejo and Cancun or the Mayan Riviera?

My husband and I are going to Mexico in the end of May. We are going on a corporate reward trip to Cancun we are staying at the RItz which will last for 5 days. We have the opportunity to go 6 days early and we need some advice. Should we just go on to Cancun or possibly the Mayan Riviera? - or should we attempt to go to the west and see Ixtapa or Zihuatenaejo.
Is 11 days in the Cancun area too much? We really need some help and are open to any suggestions...we could go anywhere...

Thanks!

Julie

Hi Julie,

In my opinion, I would go early and stay in either the Playa Del Carmen or Tulum/Akumal areas. The combination of white sand and turquoise water are unbelievable here - nothing that the Pacific side of Mexico can match. There are plenty of things to do - you couldn't possibly see them all in 11 days. Plus, you want to give yourself plenty of "beach time" to lie around, where your most difficult questions will be, "Should I continue to lay on my stomach, or should I roll over on my back?" or the REAL tough one: "Do I want a margarita, or a pina collada?"

Just a short list of things that you can do or see:
1) Snorkel (Cozumul, Akumal, Xel-Ha, etc. - lots of places)
2) Chichen Itza
3) Tulum
4) Coba
5) Isla Mujares
6) Day trip to Cozumul
7) Xcaret
8) Horseback Riding
9) Jungle Tours
10) Swimming in a cenote

I could go on and on. I love the Playa Del Carmen region.

Some hotel suggestions: Riu Palace, Royal Hideaway, Riu Yucatan, Gala Resort, Iberostar Paraiso, Moon Palace, Bahia, Adventura Palace; those are just a few of the nicer hotels I can think of.

Whatever you decide, have fun!
Sandy

I would stay in the Mayan Riviera, probably Playa del Carmen. Keep in mind that if you want to go to Zihuatanejo (which is a wonderful destination as well), you'll have to fly back to Mexico City and then fly to Zihuatanejo. That could eat up a large part of the day.

There's loads to do in the PDC area. We've been there a few times and always enjoy it.

I wouldn't stay in Cancun - it's not a place I particularly like, but the area south is terrific. If you want something other than a beach, you could head inland and visit Merida as well as see the ruins at Chichen Itza and other areas.

I totally agree with Susan and Sandy. We just returned from our third trip to Mayan Riveria and we still have things we haven't done yet. I've stayed at Moon Palace, Gala Resort and Bahia Principe. I would go back to any of these resorts. have a great time!
