costa rica- I AM IN EARLY STAGES OF PLANNING A TRIP-WHERE/WHEN/HOW

OK SO I AM NOT A WORLD TRAVELER "AT ALL" BUT I REALLY WANT TO GO TO COSTA RICA- ON A BUDGET- PROB. WILL TRAVEL ALONE. WOULD LIKE TO HIKE,SEE THE RAIN FORRESTS,BEACHES, AND WAS THINKING OF STAYING AT BED AND BREAKFAST HOTEL/ROOMS- ANY ADVICE-LOCATIONS- JUST ANYTHING THAT I WOULD ENJOY DOING. I RACE DIRT BIKES, SO ADVENTURE IS DEF. A MUST. BUT SO IS SIGHTSEEING AND RELAXING- SORRY IF I AM SO VAUGE IN MY QUESTIONS, BUT I REALLY DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT COSTA RICA, BUT I WANT TO GO SOMETIME BETWEEN JUNE AND AUG. OF 2012. I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA.
IS IT BEST TO BOOK AIR/HOTELS TOGETHER? MAYBE LIVE ON THE EDGE AND JUST FIGURE IT OUT AS I GO. I AM LOOKING TO SPEND 5-7 DAYS . THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR MY LACK OF ANY IDEA WHAT TO DO HERE ( I USE CAPS BECAUSE IT LOOKS GOOD TO ME, SO DON'T "HATE" I AM NOT YELLING

Everyone has their own favorite place, but ours is the Arenal/La Fortuna area. It has an active volcano (not doing much lately though), ziplines, rafting, natural hot springs, a beautiful waterfall, Hanging Bridges where you can hike, and the Cano Negro tour you can take to see wildlife. You could pair it with a beach location. A lot of people like to do Arenal and Manuel Antonio for a first trip, but there are a lot of popular beach areas. Explore these options and see if they're your style. We book air and hotel separately.

I was about to ask "WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ALL OF US" thanks for that last bit...

Great advice by Volcanogirl as always. Not much dirt bike action here but ATV tours are popular. In Arenal you can take a trip to La Fortuna Waterfall, nice 150 foot waterfall, rope swing in the area, can be done by horseback, mountain bike, or ATV

Canyoneering is pretty sick, you rappel down a series of waterfalls in the rainforest. Desafio is a great outfitter there and they were just voted as being one of the top ten outfitters in the world - http://www.desafiocostarica.com/

Pacuare River is one of the best rivers in the world according to National Geographic. If you land in San Jose, spend one night, you can raft the Pacuare and get dropped off in Arenal. Rios Tropicales - http://www.riostropicales.com/ or Exploradores - https://www.exploradoresoutdoors.com/ does this.

No shortage of adventure here.
Cheers

You may think it "looks nice" but it makes it harder to respond for folks trying to help you."SHOUTING" is discourteous and super hard to read.Miles Tinker showed that “all-capital text retarded speed of reading from 9.5 to 19.0 per cent for the 5 and 10 minute time limits, and 13.9 per cent for the whole 20 minute period.”[10] Tinker concluded that, “Obviously, all-capital printing slows reading to a marked degree in comparison with Roman lower case...

Personally always do best with servicecarrental.com

from $200/wk road trip to arenal.net manuealantioniopark.com

desafiocostarica.com for adventures ruralcostarica.com

Rio Celeste...is an awesome hike falls visitcostarica.com

for other options...

Happy Hunting!

I'd definitely include the Pacuare river rafting trip. Awesome river.

My favorite area is the Osa Peninsula for the pure beauty of it and the wildlife, hiking, kayaking, horseback, but it's a bit isolated from other areas...not too far from Dominical/Uvita though and if you you like surfing that would be a good combo.

There are ziplines everywhere but the highest and longest are in Arenal and Monteverde. Arenal is a good place to go. As vgirl and incabod mentioned there's a lot to do in that area including Venado Caves that was not mentioned. Not sure what your budget is...I really love Silencio del Campo as a hotel choice in Arenal.

Also do take time to read thru all the posts already here on Fodor's. Sometimes I think this should be called the "Costa Rica forum" rather than Mexico & Central America because there are so many of them!

5 days is a REALLY short trip to go that far, you basically lose the 1st & last day to travel time, which only leaves you 3 days to explore. Hopefully you can extend your stay to 7-10 days instead.

If you don't want to rent a car, Interbus Shuttle is an option for transfer between major tourist areas. From SJO area rates run $30 - $55 depending on your destination.

vgirl - Sadly, I'm back home already. Felt like a short trip (10 days) compared to my usual but it was WONDERFUL! Had a blast with shillmac and tully and all our friends at BDC.

Definitely will need 7 days and since you are on a budge, bus transport may be most affordable, but slower. Consider picking one spot and staying in that region the whole time. Arenal is the best for adventure and will provide plenty of options to keep you busy. But this means no beach time.
