Costa Rica car rental - vehicle size and company

It's been a couple of years since we've been to CR and the past two times we used Tricolor with no problems. Are they still getting good reviews - good prices and no issues from their San Jose location? Does anyone have any other companies to recommend that have been comparable?

Also, travelling with 4 adults and 2 kids - what size vehicle are we looking at? It seems as though we may need to get a minivan - or whatever sized van they rent. Does anyone have experience driving those? Will our luggage fit?

We're planning on renting the vehicle from the time we arrive and driving to Arenal, having it there. That's where we really enjoy the flexiblity of having our own car. And then driving back to Peace Lodge. We'll turn in the car before going to BDC.

Thanks!

Hey Shell,

We like Payless, and Adobe.

Good service, good vehicles, minimum drama.

Hope this helps! Let me know if I can offer any more advice.

Warm Regards,

Tricolor still going strong and getting good reviews. As for what to rent - I would recommend something like a Misubishi Montero. There is a five-passenger model and also a 6 passenger-model. The upscale would be a Toyota Prada. A van would be really roomy but not 4x4 and is expensive. If you've been before, you will know whether you will feel comfortable with not having 4x4. Really don't need it unless you are going on some of the backcountry roads. Have a great trip!

We booked our rental with Eurpocar though Jeff and his staff at CR Surf. If you book through them and take the insurance, the deposit with the car company was only $100. He made a really good point to me, in that the higher end vehicles tend to have larger tires and thicker tread on the SUVs. This was a godsend! We took the Toyota Prado in both CR and Panama.
