cheap hotel for last day in PV
We are planning to spend a week in PV, and a week travelling to MC, GDL. Our flight home leaves PV at 11 pm so we want a cheap place to crash, maybe have a nap.
However, we still want to be able to walk around and feel like we are in Mexico and not a Canadian suburb. No TV needed, but private bath preferred.
My research says that most of the one and two star "Mexican" hotels are downtown, esp. on Madero. Does anyone know if there is a strip like this closer to the airport, or am I being unrealistic?

Closest to the airport that I know of is the Marina. Anything there being cheap I don't think so check out trip advisor.com. I think what you are looking for is something in town try Los Arcos hotel or the tropicana

Madero is where very inexpensive hotels are in a row (150 to 300 peso range, 0-1 stars). It's only a 15 min. taxi cab ride from the airport, if you truly mean "cheap" would be worth taking a local bus or taxi to this area.
There's also nice 3-stars (350 to 500 peso) also in the Old Town like Posada de Roger, Hotel Rio, Frankfurt, or Hortencia (1st two have pools, all four have websites for reservations).
All have private baths available, and all are an easy stroll into and around lovely downtown neighborhoods.
The Marina and areas around the airport are more developed & mainstream touristed.

I have found info on the Internet on some hotels in the 1-3 star range in the hotel zone: Lagunita Yelapa, Suites Coral Vallatra, Suites Mar Elena. Any comments on these?
Or is it worth the cab fare to just go downtown? I understand the beaches in the hotel zone and marina Vallarta are not very nice.
I mean cheap but not a dive. I am presuming that there are Mexican hotels in the 3* and less range like that. Depending on when we leave Guadalajara, we are only there for probably 10 hours max.

Personally I'd toss the dice for a 3-star "south of the river" instead of the hotel zone any day. The neighborhood is much more welcoming, friendly, clean, scenic, than out at the hotel strip (not the prettiest part of town IMO).
None of the beaches within town PV are world-class, they're normal pacific coast beaches. Some nice coves, narrow out behind the hotels, rocky other places, lively with people & vendors & music like Playa Los Muertos on the southside.
