Cancun long weekend from the east coast or not

I was just wondering if it was worth going to Cancun (from Wash. DC)for a long weekend (3-4 nite stay) or would it be just to much of a hassle. Obviously I've never been to Cancun and I don't know anything about it. Any infor would help. Thank you in advance.

Cancun is not Mexico. It`s inauthentic and caters to the unadventurous and unimaginative traveller. If you really want to go abroad go to somewhere with some soul. You won`t find any in Cancun.

Joe, I didn't notice that Mo was asking about a place with 'soul' or even looking for an authentic Mexican exerience. He or she was asking about whether it was worthwhile to go to Cancun for a long weekend.

Personally I don't like Cancun, but lots of people do. For a long weekend, it probably is a good choice for some people. It is very Americanized, so it's basically no adjustment. You can probably get direct flights from Washington, the flight would probably only be a couple of hours probably. No time difference (I think). Lots of hotels and restaurants.

Mo, what are you looking for? That might help you make up your mind.

Mo,

If you are looking for a quick, easy getaway from DC, Cancun is definitely do-able. A direct flight can get you on the beach by lunchtime, and the price is probably right. But bear in mind that that's all you'll get (if you are going in the winter) -- warmer weather and the beach. While I wouldn't disparage Cancun as much as Joe, because Cancun does have some redeeming qualities, it is not a place I would return. It's sort of like Ocean City on tequila: high rise hotels, chain restaurants (running the gamut from KFC to Planet Hollywood), and souvenier shops everywhere, all with a slight Mexican accent.

If all you want is a warm escape to something vaguely familiar, Cancun will do. If you are looking for something different, you will either have to look fairly hard for it in Cancun, travel further afield in Mexico, or go somewhere else altogether (from DC, with its 3 airports, you should have a fair number of choices of direct flights to Caribbean).

Listen to this,
I will be traveling to Cancun in December. I am very excited. I am looking for a fun time where I can party, see beautiful scenery, flirt, dance, drink, see ancient ruins, and enjoy the water sports. Though I have not been yet, I have hear great things about Cancun. The people who have replied to you have made Cancun sound dull and lifeless. Everyone has their own opinion including me. However, if the things I mentioned before sounds like what you want then I would go for it. Trust me, I have done the research on this place!

Good Luck!

Eva you sound as though you listen in on my sisters and my conversasion--comparing beaches to Ocean City (which I refuse to return to). I've never had any desire to go to Cancun in my life because that is how I imagined it. However the Wash. Post has had several articles in the last couple months that made me want to visit Cancun. As for TamD. when you get back from you trip could you post your impressions, I would appreciate it. Jeff's reply was the first negative I've heard about cancun, maybe thats because I haven't read much about it on Fodors site.
