I am just starting to think about a trip to the Baja so i know very little about it. We live in Colorado. Is it safe to drive there? What are some of your favorite locations. I don't know when/if we will go yet but if so, probably in December,January or even February. We may have our daughter and her family with us for several months while they build a house so am thinking about some get aways. Any help to get me started would be appreciated.

I have not driven down to Baja. I have visted Los Cabos (San Jose & Cabo San Lucas) a number of times. I have also visited Loreto and did s day trip over to Magdalena Bay to see the baby whales. January and February are prime months for whale season in Baja.

I've been to only Cabo San Lucas and La Paz and enjoyed both towns very much. I'd especially recommend including La Paz is you get down that far.

But I flew into each (two separate trips) didn't drive.

At end of January and in February, you might consider going to pet the gray whales in Magdalena Bay or at San Ignacio or Guerrero Negro. Also swimming with whale sharks in LaPaz.

We drove, not the entire peninsula, only within 100 miles or so of the border. We live in Mexico and flew from Leon to TJ and rented a car, so we didn't have to do a border crossing. We average 12,000 miles or so a year, including last year from the Gulf to the Michoacan coast, Guanajujato state to the border and back, through several supposed 'hot spots'. I don't find driving in Mexico dangerous at all, and it seemed that more than half the cars we saw in Baja had Cali plates. There are some idiosyncrasies to Mexican driving, confusing signage being probably the most common. Downloading a good map to your phone is a must. A good paper map/atlas by Guia Roji is valuable too.

This site, while in Spanish, features more points of interest than any guidebook. I suppose you could google translate it? Whenever we do a road trip, I always go there for ideas along our route.

I would also add that Tijuana center is a must-see, if for no other reason than just to say you've been there.

If you make it to La Paz, this hotel is nice. It's on the edge of town and with parking.

I would fly from Colorado to Cabo San Lucas as it is on the southern most tip of the Baja California peninusla in Mexico and is not always safe driving in Mexico in the Baja area. Make sure you have your USA Passports.

If you are NOT interested in Cabo, you can always drive to San Diego then drive across (ck with your insurance as you may not be covered in Mexico and Mexico may not recognize any thing other than Mexican insurance or a bond which is required under their law) or walk across the border into Tijuana for the day. Coming back across the border crossing can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending on traffic and time of day.

Valle de la Gudalupe is beautiful and has wineries and only about a one hour drive south of Tijuana. You can do tours out of San Diego which would make things much easier.
