Depends.
Sometimes the Estrella Blanca buses are quite new & modern, sometimes they're kinda old and dumpy.

Tio, have you ever gone out of Nuevo Laredo? I'm going to a language school in San Miguel. Also, do you have any other suggestions about San Miguel? Muchas gracias. Estoy tratando de aprender Español.

I have gone out of Nuevo Laredo lots of times. First, you have a couple of options. You can bus across from the Laredo bus station on Greyhound or one of the Mexican lines. Even though its a short trip it takes a while because of a stop at customs at which the passengers may be required to unload eveything get it checked, then load it up again to go a couple of miles to the Nuevo Laredo bus station. Your other option, this is what I usually do, is walk across bridge 1 into Nuevo Laredo stop at customs for a tourist card, on the right after you cross the bridge, then take a taxi to the bus station. I have never reserved a bus in advance. I agree with Tia Gringo about Estrella Blanca. I have ridden the line with no problems but there are better. For the distance of your trip I would look for the highest level of service you can get. "El Ejecutivo" is very nice but they don't have that many departures from NL. If they go to San Miguel this would be a good choice. Generally the fewer stops, the higher level of service. As far as saftey, etc. I think Mexican buses are vastly superior to anything in the U.S. when you use the higher levels of service. There are a few cautions. Put the majority of your stuff underneath, but carry your valuables in a daypack with you. You cannot leave them unattended. The bus will stop for breaks on your trip. Take your valaubles off with you each time. Also when the bus takes breaks make sure you re-board on time. This may require sitting somewhere you can see the bus. I was on route to Matehuala a couple of years ago, we stopped at a truck stop, and the driver took off leaving an old guy behind. All this said I really like bus travel in Mexico I am planing on busing from Oaxaca to Puebla and some other destination in a couple of weeks. Have fun.

Dude, thanks for your help. Especially about the "old guy" because I am an "anciana" and will heed the warning. I will try to find out more about the other bus line. I know I can fly into León but might want more adventuresome, less expensive way.

Great detail, Dude! I was going to mention Transportes del Norte as an option, but then it occurs to me that they're part of Estrella Blanca. For a trip as long as to San Miguel, I'd definitely spring for the ejecutivo class, if it's available --- did that with the ETN buses around Mexico City recently and was VERY impressed at the quality. Too bad they don't run much north of San Luis Potosi...
