Leaving in a week and don't know if I should trust this information. Would love to have some first hand knowledge. Thanks.

If it is a Visa or Mastercard branded card. They just run it like a credit card! Not just an ATM card.

Angie,

That's true if making a purchase, but will it work from an ATM where a PIN is needed? Have you tried this and been sucessful? Thanks.

Your ATM card should work at the Barclay's branches (in Belize City and Dangriga, and maybe in Belmopan). The other banks in Belize have ATMs but won't accept foreign-issued ATM cards (why that is is a long story.) You can get cash advances at almost any bank for a small fee (US$2.50 to $15) plus whatever your issuing bank charges in fees and interest.)

But bottom line is the better way to handle things is to bring cash, credit cards and travelers checks.

RI,
They beat me to it but yeah, you usually have to go to bank. It really is more like having a credit card than an ATM card! Your hotel may be set up to process it as well!

We're from Canada and 4 years ago we used our bank cards in ATMS in Mexico and Colombia. The only problem was that you couldn't rely on it as the ATMs were down more often than they were up. If your bank is part of a network, it is good worldwide with that network. Our bank is part of the Cirrus and Plus systems.
