birds?

We will be in CR for six says in March. My family wants lots of action so we're going to do Sky Trek and Hanging Bridges in Arenal, a tour of the park at MA, and then rafting down the Pacuare River. Of these places, where would my best chance for seeing exotic birds be? I can't tell my family specifically that we're going birding, but I would love to see as much as I can.
Thanks,
Laurie

Don't expect to see much except the tops of trees on Sky Trek. We have seen a lot of birds while hiking on our own at Finca Ecologica up by monteverde but we know what to look for by listening. Ditto on the Pacuare although we have seen a few interesting birds like kingfishers. Ask the driver/guide on the trip to the Pacuare to keep an eye out for sloths. We have seen several on the trip to the river. Mostly you will be concentrating on your rafting.

Your best bet will be in Manuel Antonio area. Don't forget to look in the trees right by the hotel! Most birds are best seen when sitting or standing still.

A closet birder?????LOL

Want a second, concurring opinion?
Definitely MA. The noise of zip lines and all the excitement of the people scares away most wildlife at SkyTrek - except for mosquitos. (bring insect repellant).

There's a great possiblity you'll see birds everywhere else. Consider this : birds like quiet. We saw the Kingfishers, Great Putoo(sp?), and you're going to love this - a number of birds I've never seen before, nor do I know their names - sorry, birdlovers. They are there, though!

TriplesecDelay, You are a better birder than you think if you saw a Greater Potoo! They are one of the hardest birds to see!

I loved your response and between you and the closet birder it will bring a smile to my face for the rest of the day . Thanks, I really needed that.

Hi Jessie_ : I was told by the raft guide it was a Great Potoo. I took pictures. I would need to compare to a reference book to be 100%. I don't want to make a false claim. This particular specimen was asleep around 3pm and had its head turned into itself to keep warm (or dark?) on the Penas Blancas last September.

More birds were seen by our friends who continued on to Rincon de Vieja. We swapped photo CDs and I am impressed with their sightings.

Regards,
