Back to Oaxaca.

It appears I never posted the link to my second series on Oaxaca, done this fall. But I don't think the information's too old to be useful, so here it is:

Well done. I know why you keep returning. Oaxaca for good reason is considered México's premier destination apart from Mexico City, and in some aspects even better. This is a good article:

Well, damn. I realize it isn't a secret but less known is a good thing. The good news is the link "San Miguel de Allende named world’s top city".

I lived for much of my adult life in Bisbee AZ. It was 25 miles down the road beyond Tombstone. I always thought, how lucky it was to have the better known place placed where it could syphon off the bulk of the daytrippers from Tucson so we'd only get those who knew that Bisbee was far better. So maybe the SM designation will syphon off the bulk of the visitors who don't know any better and leave Oaxaca for we aficionados!

I'm hoping a little more positive pub might help to offset some of the negative news Oaxaca suffers such as the recent earthquake and the ongoing nonsense with striking teachers and the various other groups that want to gravy train their movement. Certainly the local economy could use the influx of tourist $$.
As far as Oaxaca becoming the alternative to San Miguel, probably not any time soon. In fact, Guanajuato seems to be the trendy place these days. SECTUR studies over the last 5 years show Guanajuato as having nearly double the tourists as San Miguel. So a bit of a reprieve for Oaxaca, I think.

Well, that's a good thing though I know people can use our money. Maybe we can all agree to spend a little more and offset the deficit. I suspect neither the earthquake nor the strikers have much effect on numbers.

Thanks for sharing the link. Mexico and especially Oaxaca has long been on my wife radar. We are looking a spending a few months in Mexico using Oaxaca as a base later this year so this has been a helpful start to our initial research.

You're so welcome crellston. Did you notice the link to the series on my first visit? That could be even more useful than this one.

Thanks, Leely2, it is indeed.

I figure it's because I was born in San Francisco.

Thanks, mme. We've been wanting to get back to Oaxaca; it's been 2 years. Your post/blog helped me to pull the trigger for a 10 day visit in January. We'll include stops in Puebla, Orizaba and Cordoba.
As far as Vocho pics, check out this one while I was out walking here in Queretaro. If the link works:

Crellston, if Fodor's ever does PM's, I might need to pick your brain about Ecuador. We've a friend in San Miguel from Otavalo that insists we go.

Baldone, that's great! I've never seen one in that configuration. I have a '69 Bug in the garage and had a camper van, too, for a long time, a '68 that as far as I know is still going. But that one in your picture is just great.

Have a wonderful visit. Glad I could help. I wish I was going too. Sometime, but I just got home from Egypt so doubt it's in the cards this winter. Must save my allowance.

Baldone - ask away! We spent a lot of time in Ecuador, including a couple of visits to Otavalo. Allegedly the new Fodors site with a PM facility is arriving in the next few weeks. I am sure I will be picking the collective brains of those here on our ossicle trip to Mexico later in the year.

Great photos and report!

Now, perhaps you can answer a question I held for years. I note your screen name at travelgumbo is portmoresby. I'm guessing this refers more to the feckless protagonist of The Sheltering Sky than to the capital of Papua New Guinea (though I know you do get around). My question is, why do you suppose Bowles gave his character such an odd name in such a serious book? It seems more suited to a farce. I've wondered whether it was simply a "working name" during the writing which somehow was never replaced. What do you think?

By-the-way, I think it's a fine handle for the internet.

Fra, you're the first person to have "gotten" the name. I'd read the book & loved it, then the movie and loved it, too. It was some time before it dawned on me where the name came from. I can only surmise that Bowles, an odd guy, picked an odd name because it amused him (as it does me). And speaking of odd, Malkovich as Port tied it up nicely for me and I couldn't not use the name for blogging purposes.

I'd read several places that Bowles loved to have visitors at his home in Tangier. I was there a couple of times and could never quite bring myself to contact him. Probably because as an introvert, I couldn't imagine having strangers trouping through my house, and then I lost my chance with his passing.

Thanks for reading and I commend your insight.

MP -- I've never seen the movie -- in fact, I'd forgotten they'd made one. It's on Netflix so I think we'll watch it tonight. Thanks for the reminder.

One of my favorites and the only movie from which I have the soundtrack. Both movie and music I find quite compelling. Watch for Paul Bowles sitting at the bar in the beginning, the "narrator."
