Argentine Lake District
Is the Argentina side of the lake district that much cheaper the the Chile side? How are the accomodations, not Llao Llao type places, but B&B types. Much different than the Chile side? Also, how difficult is it to go from one country to the other by car? What kind of customs stops do they have. Any info on favorite places, restaurants, etc. appreciated.

It is very difficult to go by car from Argentina to Chile in the lake district -- if not impossible. I am quite sure that the Argentine side is infinitely less expensive than the Chilean side. Unless you especially want B&B accommodations, there is no need for that in Argentina today because of the incredible exchange rate for dollars. NOW, is the time to visit Argentina for fantastic value.

The rack rate for the Llao Llao and a few other places I checked is still quite high. How do you get the cheaper rates? Is it possible to drive to the area from Chile? I would like to have a car to tour the area. I thought I had read that you could take the bus back after doing the boat trip through the lakes, so I figured there would be a road going along the lakes. Is there? I can't tell from the small map I have.My interest in inns or B&B's was not so much for the cost, but I would like places with charm and character more than room service and conference rooms.I am interested in the regional cuisine rather than international cuisine.

Jml,<BR><BR>It's very easy to go from Chile to Argentina (and viceversa) thru the Cardenal Samore pass. This pass is located between Villa La Angostura in Argentina (gorgeous town), and Puerto Montt in Chile. You can drive easily there. My husband recalls only one short stop at customs, where he had only to show his ID (he's argentinian, you must provide a valid passport).<BR><BR>You can't be wrong with any B&B that you choose in Villa La Angostura. If you want to splurge, stay at least a couple of days at the Llao Llao, you will not regret it.<BR><BR>Enjoy your trip, and welcome to Argentina!

Hi Jml, I have stayed in LLao LLao it is a very nice place in the most magnificent setting you can imagine.Lakes, mountains and a huge park, + the golf course. It is like 1/2 from the center of Bariloche. Besides this hotel there many others less expensive which are also lovely.\\ Several are downtown .<BR><BR>It is possible to go from country to the other navigating the lakes, in catamarans, this is some kind of a regular link between both countries. You can consult any travel agency in Argentina or Chile. It is not expensive and I guess that it is much more rewarding than driving.<BR>Villa Angostura mentioned in another posting is very nice also it is on the opposite shore of the lake .<BR>( Opposite Bariloche I mean) The top activity is sking but it is lovely all year and there are many things to do.
