I have no idea, but some friends of mine from Torreon asked me to spend a week there with them. Apparently their family has been going there for years. I will be back in about four weeks and if you can hold off until then I may have some info for you.

I've traveled all over....and have lived in many countries. I was a Peace Corps volunteer for almost three years in Colombia and Ecuador.I've gone 2nd and 3rd class.
Mazatlan is a place I visit 3-4 times a year. It's worth checking out. The beaches are beautiful, the people are friendly, the fishing is fab!. I suggest Dec/Jan travel. It's much cooler. I just returned on 6/22 after 5 days and it was REALLY hot. Only to get hotter.

In January we took a 7 day Carnival Cruise from Long Beach to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas. Of the three cities we were most interested in going back to see more of Mazatlan... because it was a REAL city, with REAL people -- not just a tourist "outpost" for sunbathers and big game fishing-types. Also, because it was a "real" city, prices were reasonable, there was a great selection of restaurants, bars, shopping, adventures and diversions. Definately a more "multi-faceted" city, although the downtown area is not charming, like Puerto Vallarta. The beach at Mazatlan is quite long and great for walking (and enhanced by periodic stops for a cold cerveza or steamed shrimp at various friendly beach bars). By the way, Carnival Cruises are cheap for good reason -- the food was lousy (ex: broiled salmon smothered in a spicy BBQ sauce), the help is underpaid (and not real proficient in English, either). Carnival is definately the cattle-car of cruises, sort of a cross between a cruise and a trip across country on a Greyhound Bus! However, we thought that the Mexican Riviera was fabulous (we were out swimming in January -- which we could never do just a few hours north in San Diego).

We were in Mazatlan for a week over Thanksgiving in 1996 and loved it. We had previously been to Puerta Vallerta and Cabo San Lucas.

My husband is a golfer and Mazatlan has the requisite golf courses for his pleasure (one at the El Cid Resort where we stayed and one out near the airport - newer with ocean views).

It is a real city. It was very reasonable, too. We spent LESS than anticipated. Beer was less than $1US and food in general was inexpensive.

I agree with another respondent that winter is best time to go. Much too hot in the summer.

I especially enjoyed the one tour we tooked the the colonial cities in the interior. Would highly recommend. Senor Frog's is fun, especially when a cruise ship is in.

This summer I spent a month in Torreon visiting with some Mexican friends. When the school year ended we all headed to Matzatlan through the the mountains of southern Durango. About 25 of us spent a week at the beach. It was a lot of fun and the sunsets were terrific. The Mexicans I was with prefer Cancun, but Matzatlan comes in a good second. They have no use for Acapulco. In the first two weeks of July it is hot and humid and most of the clientele is Mexican, the touristas come in the winter. The family that I was with thought it was great. They go every year and stay at Torres Matzatlan and really enjoy it. Looking for a popular Mexican drink? Try a Vampiro!
