Amazon River cruises. What else ?

I have read good reviews on this forum about Amazon Clipper Cruises and we are considering to take a cruise with them. I have checked their web site and theiy offer:

3 days Amazon River cruise
4 days Negro River criuse
6 days Amazon + Negro River cruise

Should we decide for the 6 days complete cruise do you think our visit to Amazon area would be complete or maybe we could add something else from Manaus ? We have a total of 2 weeks. Already been in Rio and Salvador de Bahia/Praja do Forte in 2000.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Period might be august 2008, supposed to be dry.

Fabio:

We happily recommend that you get in touch with a guide we used several years back. We had booked one of the many 16-passenger river boats for a four day cruise on the Rio Negro and Amazon...when we walked down to the little dock at our hotel in Manaus, we wee greeted by a guide and a motor launch with a small out-board motor canoe tied to its aft. Turned out only three people had booked the cruise and instead of sending the big boat, the motor launch had two cabins and a crew of five...what a great break for us. We went up tributaries only smaller boats could manage...visited remote villages, etc...

The guide is in the city of Manaus...contact him amd maybe he can arrange a similar experience.

thank you tower

I will check into it!
would you bring 2 kids aged 12 and 6 on this trip ?? well the 12 yrs old has a behaviour like an adult and is very much interested in nature and birdwatching. my only concern is the anti-malaric and yellow fever prophilaxis at the same time !!
for malaria we know Malarone pills from our trip to southern africa which has no side effects but we need to talk to a tropical deseases doctor for the yellow fewer !!
would you go in august or december/january ?

Fabio:

The Tropical resort hotel near Manaus, (about 15 kms.)and right smack on the riverside is excellent. Rates are about $150 now, with breakfast buffet...

Fabio, we went in April..I think summer, which is winter in SA (although it's always warm I'm told, around the equator)...and we got the required yellow fever shots and also took a malaria medication. I wouldn't hesitate to bring your two children. They'll love it...Chico tooks us alligator watching in the early morning, and we did a fair amount of bird watching and piranha fishing...yes, we ate the piranha for dinner...he has a great cook on board.
