Trying to move this to the Mexico board.

Trying to plan a pre-Christmas vacation for us, 12 and 9 year old. In researching Cancun on this site, have seen mentioned Akumal. Could anyone with experience there please advise? We love the beach, snorkeling, relaxing and a bit of sightseeing. Usually stay in condos where possible. Also comfortable driving most places so can rent a car if need be. I would appreciate any input.

i haven't stayed there only visited on a recent wedding site scouting trip. we're getting married there next spring. it's beautiful! my bro with 8 and 5 years olds loved it. lots of condo options within if not on the beach. akumal bay is amazing - snorkling right offshore, diving, great beaches, lots of palm trees and palapas to relax under, restaurants and shops in town. check out locogringo.com/akumal, lascasitasakumal.com, www.lasvillasakumal.com and www.hotelakumalcaribe.com.

Thanks for the websites. I've tried reading old posts but not much there. One poster said it was "a nightmare trip" another loved Akumal. I'll try the sites you suggested. Thanks.

I've just started researching the area myself. Some good friends are getting married there in May 07. I asked about the nicest accomodations in the area and the bride suggested Las Casita Akumal which is on the link Bambii sent you.

I stayed at the Akumal beach resort a couple of years ago and I loved the area. The beach is quite nice and there is good snorkeling in Akumal Bay. There is also really good snorkelling at Yal Ku nearby.
The Akumal Beach Resort is defintely no luxury resort and may not have as many things for your kid's to do as one of the bigger resorts.

Hi,

We have stayed at the Hotel Akumal Caribe 5 times now and really like the place, we have booked through Kay and Gary at locogringo.com the last 3 times and will do so again. They live down there so if there are any problems they are close at hand if need be and the price is the same as if you booked through a hotel website.

I just checked and both Hotel Akumal Caribe as well as the ABR are sold out for the holidays. Suggest to start writing right away, there are some condos still open and if you are going before Christmas you can probably still get in.

Let them know your specific needs, hotel, AI, condo or villa, price range, what you absolutely have to have and what you can live without (TV?) and they will work with you to help you have a nice vacation with your family.

We stayed at the Playa Caribe condos in Akumal for 10 nights in June. It is an awesome place and I can't imagine how anyone would not care for this area. It's great for families and there is lots to do and see. Good Luck!

This is one of our absolute favorite vacation spots. Perfect for those who want to get away from the noise and crowds, and who are not interested in a raucous nightlife. Almost all of the condos on Half Moon Bay are great and with beautiful views. Our favorite place to stay is Las Casitas Akumal, on Akumal Bay, but it is probably booked. We have also stayed at Lol Kanaab and Hotel Akumal Caribe.

You will love it. MOre info on the locogringo website mentioned. Rent a car - you will be glad you did - there is lots to see and fun sidetrips.

Great beach, great snorkeling...Yal Ku lagoon is not to be missed, it's amazing. Many condo choices. You probably won't mind the driving. For more snorkeling check out Xel-ha. We were afraid it would be too "amusement park" like but it was lovely, great snorkeling, fun walk through the "jungle". I only spent a day in Akumal (we stayed in Tulum)...I found it a little too 'American' for my tastes but it is very pretty and would meet all your needs. Have fun!

Hello january89,
I plan to travel to the Yucatan with my 12-year-old daughter Dec. 13-23 or so. Any tips you've gathered in your research that is specific to families would be warmly welcomed. Thanks for your original post, the replies have been helpful.

Loved Las Villas Akumal. Large patios with stairs directly down to the pool area. Comfortable accomodations. Would definitely go back there.

Ok, we can't go Christmas. Would we be crazy to go here during Spring Break? We want a family spring break, not Cancun. It would be the first full week in April. I appreciate your opinions. Thanks.
