Acapulco to Ixtapa

Hi all, need advice from anyone who might have visited Acapulco AND Ixtapa on the same vacation. We plan to go to Acapulco for a week and now also consider Ixtapa on the same trip. They are about 160 miles apart. Are there any bus services between the two cities, kind of like Cancun and PDC?

Yes there are buses. A couple of years ago, we were in Zihuatanejo and planned to visit Acapulco. We went to a travel agency in town and reserved a bus ticket. As it turned out, we ended up not going and cancelling our reservation, but it was easy enough to do.

Thank you Susan. Was the bus station in downtown Zihuatanejo? Do you remember the approximate cost? Was the travel agency from your hotel? Really appreciate the info!

The travel agency would have been in downtown Zihuatanejo. We just happened to pass one and went inside to book. Since we didn't actually end up going to Acapulco, I don't really know where the bus terminal was - I'm assuming it was downtown Zihuatanejo as well.

Another poster, NONSTOP, listed a website for bus transportation for travel within Mexico. I looked at it earlier. Even though it is in Spanish it was helpful. I could kinda figure out what the costs and routes are. Appreciate your help and poster-NONSTOP!

Hi. We did Mexico City, Acapulco, and Ixtapa in the same trip last August. We rented a car, but I know there is definitely bus service. The ride between Acapulco and Ixtapa is pretty, and I felt safe driving. The bus station is on the main road that goes through Ziahuatenejo. I enjoyed Ixtapa more than Acapulco- much smaller, quieter , and cleaner.

Question for MA and/or Anyone who knows:

I want to go to Ixtapa and Zih but which town/hotel would you recommend staying in ? We're in our 50s so we like the calm things ... shopping, touring, photography. We like to stay within walking distance of stores/restaurants, which sounds like Ixtapa but Zih sounds prettier. Are 4-5 nights there enough? What would you recommend? Is Acapulco really a place to avoid ? Too big-city feel ?

We stayed at the Radisson in Ixtapa because we got good rates on their website. It was nice, not wow, but it suited our needs. Good beach front and pools. There are about 6 or 7 hotels in a row on the strip; the only other hotel we got into was the Barcelo which seemed nice. Las Brisas is supposed to be nice, but you would have to take taxis to the restaurant/shopping area which is across the street from the strip of hotels. I had always heard that Zihuatenejo was a quaint fishing village. I found it to be a not so quaint town, but lots of inexpensive good restaurants. The beach hotels are a little removed from "down town", but I was more impressed with Ixtapa. It's easy to jump from Ixtapa to Zihuantenjo in a taxi, so you could visit the beaches in Z. during the day. While in Ixtapa, we took a boat taxi to Isla Ixtapa, an island with beaches, water sports, and restaurants; it was a nice day trip. Acapulco is not a place to avoid; it's just very different from Ixtapa. It's much more commerical and touristy. I don't know where you're from, but being from the east coast it reminds me of Virginia Beach and Ocean City. We stayed at the Radisson there too which is removed from the beach front hotels downtown. Not impressed with the beach there. We liked a beach outside town called Pie de la Cuesta. If you're deciding between Acapulco and Ixtapa, I recommend Ixtapa. We hope to try Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos soon.

I definitely preferred Zihuatanejo to Ixtapa. Ixtapa is a resort town - it doesn't feel like a real place. There are lots of good restaurants and some really good shopping in Zihuatanejo, so I don't see any advantage to Ixtapa for that either. I wouldn't call Zihuatanejo a 'quaint' fishing village - maybe it was at one time, but it's a decent sized place now. We didn't stay in a hotel, but rented a small 'villa' for our stay.

Acapulco is ok, but I probably wouldn't go back. It really is a big city. We stayed outside of town in Pie de la Cuesta which was much more low key. Waves were huge though, so we couldn't really swim there. (That also seemed to be the situation in Ixtapa - most people seemed to swim in the hotel pools. Zihuatanejo was much calmer.)

Hi MA,
How long was your trip? Would you recommend the same trip to others? How many days did you stay at each town?

Take the Bus.No need for reservations unless sit is a Holiday. 4 hours & the first class buses have A/c, Great reclining seats (bigger than a first class airliner Banos on board. Most show movies often in English w/Spanish subtitles.
Ixtap is a planned tourist destination. Lovely, neat & mostly expensive. Zihua is real Mexico with tons of great cafés, Small hotels & Inns & lots of local flavor. I spend at least 6 weeks there every winter often longer but I do travel elsewhere usually by bus,

Thanks. We've actually been to Ixtapa a few times and now have a timeshare at there. We fly standby (airline employee) and the flight to Zihua is too full. Do I need to call ahead to reserve? Car rental looks like about $75 US for the week, but that's without tax and ins. which may be alot. How much is the bus for family of four, or might we be better off just driving? My wife is worried that it is not safe to drive, mainly because we never have. We alway take taxis or the local buses,(cheap and fun)
Never been there in Oct, always in May. What weather should I expect?

Thanks alot, windowmax
