Acapulco Information

In February I will be travelling to Acapulco and staying at the Mayan Palace Resort. I was wondering if anyone has information on how far the hotel is from the Airport and what price a taxi for 6 would be. Also, where are some good seafood and authentic mexican restaurants as well as good moderately priced nightlife?

The resort is closer to the airport than "town" is. Since the taxis are very small, i imagine you will have to hire a van to get you there with 6 people. The taxis from the airport are pretty reputable, just agree on a price first. It won't be a fortune like the states taxis. Mayan Palace is away from the city so you will have to take taxis into town. I don't think the bus system goes that far. Don't be afraid to take the bus though once you get into town. They are clearly marked on the windsheild where they go. Usually they go from one end of town to the other if they say "Hornos-Base" that means they go from the naval base to hornos beach which is the far side of town. It's around .35 a ride it's best to have a pocket full of pesos although they will give you back the change if needed. And hang on, once you pay they are on their way to the next stop. It's crazy, but fun.
Restarants are all over, we found in Feb 2001 that the prices for dinner were about $12-18. That includes seafood and italian or mexican. If you like good italian go to palermo's. It's in the middle of the "city area" upstairs above an old shopping plaza. Wonderful starlit view and great food. We like Paradise for seafood. They love to entertain while you eat and the food is good. Mexican is best eaten at Beto's. Reaonable and beachfront. Unfortunetly for you, you'll have to go into the city anytime you want to do anything. Oh and the nightlife, well the big disco's don't open doors until 10:30pm and stay open all night. usually they have a ladies night, guys pay like$20 to get in but ladies are free and then the drinks are all included. Other than that alot of the beachfront hotels have good stuff at night. Ask around. We are 40ish and have been there twice now and love it. Been to PV but not enought to do. We are taking our kids who just graduated from college in January as a gift. They are geeked about it. They went the first time with us. Hope this will help alittle bit.

Thanks for your response. It will be very helpful. I was wondering what are some good sightseeing activities. 4 of us in the group are 24-27 years old and two are 54. Have you heard any reviews on the Mayan Palace? I have heard it is a nice resort out of town and the water is less polluted then in town. Any other information on things to do or see that are a must would be appreciated. Once again, Thanks.

Mayan Palace is a joke. The Mayans were never even in this part of Mexico during their reign. The name is a marketing ploy and more likely refers to the pyramid shape of the hotel than anything else that is remotely Mayan. If you are serious about Mayan culture, Acapulco is not the place, nor is this highly marketed resort/time share.

CB-

Obviously YOU aren't interested but there are people who do like to read up on their host culture so they don't appear to be completely uneducated travelers. Sure, some people just want beers and babes and that's fine for them. Other people are may be looking for more "authenticity", otherwise they'd just go to Disneyworld.

Joey:

Obviously, you don't have a clue of what I am interested in. I read "Karen's" post and thought that it was rude and funny that she attacked someone just because they chose a hotel in Acapulco with a "foreign" name relating to a culture that is nowhere to be found near it. So what does that mean? If I go to Paris I cannot stay at the Angleterre hotel because it relates to a different country? Corey NEVER said or implied that they wanted to see Mayan culture, just that they were looking for a good Mexican restaurant!

Now, along you come to attack ME because I ask what I think is a legitimate question: where in the thread does it say that someone is looking for culture? Have you been to Acapulco? You should know that there is no culture to be found in Acapulco, just sea, sun, and night life.

Chill!

I am interested in the culture of Mexico, but, that was not the reason for my mentioning the Mayan Palace. I will be staying there and wanted to know if it is a reputable hotel. Has anyone stayed there and want to share their comments on the hotel. I am not interested in the name of the hotel but rather the accomodations. Thanks,
Corey

I just returned from Acapulco and I liked it. It all depends on what you expect and how you play the game. If you speak Spanish, you will like it since it is a typical Mexican city with real people. If you looking for a "Cancun" experience, it may not be the place. I stayed near the town at Boca Chica hotel and took the micro buses around town. Will go back next year. Gp

Thanks Greg. I know enough Spanish to get me where I'm going and what I need. I have heard that the Mayan Palace is a very nice hotel. I can't wait to get down there and get out of this North Dakota weather. If any one else has any must do's or don'ts please post a reply. Thanks,
Corey

Has anyone done any fishing in Acapulco? If so, how was it and what types of fish did you catch? If any? Was the fishing trip worth it and do you have an outfitter you would recommend? Thanks,
Corey
