4 days in Belize

4 days in Belize
Let me preface this I fully realize that 4 days is not enough for Belize but its all we have.
Here is some background, we are taking a 2 week vacation to Central America. For 1 week of the trip we will be with my in laws in Playa del Carmen. But because we are going to Playa Wednesday to Wednesday we have 4 days before and 5 days after Playa to travel elsewhere. We have decided to spend the 5 days in Havana after Playa but are trying to decide what to do for the 4 days before and are leaning towards Belize.
The problem is that we are limited in our knowledge of Belize and can't decide where to go. We want to keep it on the cheaper side so flying to Planceia is not an option. I personally want something that would be different from both Playa and Havana but I know some in my group really want to stay near beaches.
Any suggestions on where in Belize is best for a 4 day trip? And what sre the biggest highlights/must-see/do attractions for wherever you recommend?

If by 4 days you mean 3 nights, I'd stay in Yucatán/Quintana Roo - it wouldn't be worth the expense and hassle to get there and back. If you mean 4 nights, maybe the same thing. Or maybe take a water taxi from Chetumal to either Ambergris Caye or on to (our favorite) Caye Caulker, then return.
There's a nice Maya site in northern Belize, Lamanai, generally accessed by boat up the jungly New River from Orange Walk Town. If you're into birding there are some places for that in the north, or head south and west to the San Ignacio area for some caving (ATM is awesome and popular, Actun Chapat is also awesome but less visited), maybe some Maya sites, a stop at the unique Belize Zoo, etc.
I'd pick up a guide book - even an older edition from a library would help. Happy trails!

Then I wouldn't go to 3 places in such a short time. That's what is going to eat up your budget.
Why not spend the "4 days before" somewhere different but nearby in Mexico instead? There's loads of great things to see and do on the Yucatan peninsula.
Going to Belize for only 4 days when you don't know anything about it and have a somewhat limited budget, doesn't make sense to me. Why not save Belize for when you have a couple weeks to be able to take full advantage of the visit and have researched why it is you want to go there?

We have considered staying somewhere else in Mexico instead but we are really looking to have a different experience than Playa. For some clarification.
1. Going to Belize doesn't put any bigger of a dent in our budget than going to Playa 4 days earlier. Still have to fly there so its only one flight either way. By keeping it on the cheaper side I meant we will probably stay in Hostels and cheaper Airbnbs and eat street food and not eat/stay at the higher end places.
2. We will likely get there by Saturday morning and then leave Wednesday morning. So, that leaves us with basically 4 full days and 4 nights.
3. It's not that I don't know anything about Belize it's that I know very few people who have spent significant time there. This is unusual for me because I have traveled a decent amount and know others who have as well. I know I want to go to Belize and I'm sure I will be back after this trip. I'm just having trouble narrowing down where to go because there is so much to do for such a small country.
4. I am not the type of traveler to sit in one city/place for too long. I get antsy and am used to moving place to place. I get this isn't for everyone but it works for us. 4 days feels like a decent amount of time to get to know one part of Belize.

Easy enough. If your people want beach, bus to Chetumal and then water taxi or flight to Ambergris Caye/San Pedro. Much different than the popular beach towns in MX, much smaller, less people, etc.

Hi,
I would recommend doing what Katie recommended.
The water taxi from Chetumal to Ambergris Caye is about 2 horus but you have to check before you take it as it doesn't go everyday. You can also have a one day in Caye Caulker or stay a night there.
