? ATM in Santa Elena Monteverde?
We are leaving soon and I am trying to figure out money. We do not seem to be in many places other than the airport where there are ATM's. I had read that there was one in Santa Elena. Is it one that usually works? I hate to bring in a lot of cash to cover our expenses and am hoping I could get some there

Hi cahenn - There is an ATM in Monteverde/Santa Elena right next to the Sky Trek office. We tried to use it one day but were unsuccessful. My husband thinks he did not put enough zeros in the amount he wanted to withdraw. The machine did ask in the beginning if you wanted instructions in Spanish or English and he pushed the English button, but the instructions came up in Spanish. He thinks he messed up with the amount in colones he wanted to withdraw. If you are knowledgeable of Spanish, I think you should not have a problem.
I would suggest using a card that has a Plus on the back. I have heard they work more often than the others. We did use an ATM in Manuel Antonio on a number of occasions and had no problem at all.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, seawitch1. No hablo espanol muy bien. It does help to know we might have trouble. Wouldn't you know that would be the last opportunity to withdraw cash before heading to Nosara. Maybe we could get our driver to stop in Nicoya if we have problems.

There's one at the Coopemax (I don't even remember what that was!) in Sta. Elena and it worked for us. But I wouldn't necessarily count on it--some ATMs worked and others didn't with our cards. Have a great trip!

Last August, I spent a week in Monteverde studying Spanish at CPI and while there used the Western Union ATM located just up the hill from the Serpentario, (which I highly recommend along with the Ranario) The WU ATM is just outside of Santa Elena, up the big hill, on the road to Monteverde. It worked dependably for me and had been recommended by the school for its relative dependability.
Have a great trip.
