yucatan transportation
Hi Fodorites--
I am planning to fly into Cancun wk of Dec 20 and travel the Maya Riviera, making stops in Akumal for a couple days and then on to Tulum area. I want to see the sights near Tulum -- ruins, cenotes, and then onto Sian Kaan biological preserve. I don't have the itinerary completely firmed up yet. What's the best way to handle transportation-- rent a car which may end up not being used some days or take buses/taxis to particular destinations? Thanks in advance. Kathy |
It's much easier to rent a car. You can go on your time schedule. We always rent a car.
I don't think there are any buses that go down the Boca Paila Rd (Tulum and Sian Kaan). There are taxis, but it can certainly add-up. There are collectivos (passenger vans that provide transport) that run along highway 307 only. I've never used them, but I think you just stand on the side of the highway and flag them down. You may think there are days when you won't use the car...but chances are that you will. A quick run to the store for water and snacks. You may want to drive to a restaurant to eat. Or go to a remote area where getting a taxi back might be impossible. |

agree with Pepper. Renting and driving in this area is really not difficult, just be cautious and get insurance, and a car will make your trip much better.

If you are going to spend a few days in cancun or playa del carmen, don't rent a car until you are leaving. However, for Akumal or Tulum I would definitely recommned a car. Shop around different rental web sites as the prices vary considerably.
