Yucatan or Pacific Coast?

My wife and I (early 30s) are now debating whether to go to a beach town on the Yucatan peninsula or on the Pacific Coast? We are likely to go in February and don't want to get caught on the Yucatan in the middle of spring break frenzy with lots of drunk college kids. Any suggestions? We were think Los Cabos or FS Punta Mita but seem to be hearing mixed reviews. Sounds like the Yucatan beaches are better? Any suggestions on places with high end FS-type resorts on the Yucatan? Or further thoughts on the Punta Mita/Los Cabos?

I am a huge fan of Puerto Vallarta, which is the airport you'd use, but Punta Mita is 1+ hour to the north of town. So if you are simply looking for a resort-only experience and price is not prohibitive, this is a lovely area. And I can't imagine any spring breakers will be around.

I would definitely pick this over Cabo, knowing nothing about the specific resorts, because I prefer the lush jungle, surrounding mountains, Bay of Banderas of PV, over the desert peninsula which is the Baja.

Have been to NV, PV, Cancun and Tulum.

The Yucatan has breathtaking beaches and clearer, blue water if you enjoy snorkeling/scuba.

PV's beaches are not as stunning. However, you get beach, jungle and mountains all in one area. Also, the town of PV still "feels" Mexican and is very enjoyable in its own right.

In the Yucatan, Royal Hideaway always is spoken of highly as is Maroma. Haven't been to either personally. You might also look at differentworld.com for some alternative types of properties in the area.

After visiting PV a long time ago and then Cancun last week, I give my vote to the Yucatan. I did not like PV at all and its beaches were unattractive, but this is my opinion only. Although many people say that Cancun is touristy, I feel it's a real beach vacation if that's what you're looking for. As to PV it's small too, but I found it dismal.

You should have little trouble with Spring Break kids in February in Cancun.
The real idiocy doesn't heat up until March. Good luck!

I like PV, but do love the Yucatan!
The Ritz Carlton or JW Marriott or smaller boutique hotels like Maroma or Ikal del Mar will give you the highend experience you're looking for...
I haven't seen too many mixed reviews of Punta Mita near PV, however; it looks gorgeous, & it is one of the top resorts in the world. I think Andrew Harper's report rates as #3 in the world or something like that.

I also agree, the carribean is so much nicer if you prefer to swim/snorkel/etc. If you go south of cancun, Playa del Carmen area, you will have no problems with spring breakers, they normally stay in Cancun.
