Why the Four Seasons?
#42
Good Morning shillmac:
I have been reading and listening on Fodors!!
Things are okay here..the weather is good now and summer is here so it is difficult to think of going to the Tropics at this time of the year!
It is after September that we like to start to get away to warmer places!!
However, I would go to Costa Rica tomorrow..but no one from here wants to go ,can you imagine !!!
Take Care

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to add 3 things about the 4 seasons : 1. the golf course uses a type of grass that can be watered almost completely with sea water - thus, its not , as a previous poster claimed using tons of valuable drinking water; 2. Unlike the other hotels around it - the 4 S does not allow motorized water sports - which are loud and the ones from other resorts are destroying the bay; and 3. the 4 S was built on what was for years cattle grazing lands - so they really didn't pull down all that many trees (and lets face it - any hotel you have ever stayed at in CR has had to pull somethng down to build it) - in fact they wished they had more trees.
Look, I've stayed all over CR and for part of my Honeymoon stayed at the 4S - and it is a truly amazing hotel - it only has about 150 rooms so its quite small and I have to say even as a fancy fancy hotel goes - its one of the best (in my opinion) in the world.
I really don't want to start another fight over - Costa Rica is an amazing country.

Finally someone with some facts and not to mention a good dose of common sense has replied. I know my comments have not been popular but they have been true. The problem with posts such as these is that far too many people give opinions about things they have never seen or have limited knowledge. Good Job

A lot of people probably appreciate what you said but did not comment.
If you stayed at the Four Seasons good for you.
I was at the Four Season , did not stay there, but it is a very lovely place.
And yes they abided by all the Ecological rules, which is what Fiesta Premier(across the bay also did)
There is nothing wrong with going to a lovely resort and taking day tours from there.....
For those that want to drive from place to place ,there is nothing wrong with that either.
We are not here to tell anyone what kind of holiday they should have, where and what they should eat, or where they should go.
Thank you for your comments.
I am sure you had a terrific holiday at the Four Season, doing long day tours and then coming back to your resort for some rest and relaxation.
You certainly do not have to explain to me ( nor to anyone else ) how you want to enjoy your holiday.
No I do not have shares in the Four Season (LOL)!!!
I do not want to ramble on because everything has already been said.
I just want to say that I appreciate your comments and you opinions.

Wow. For what my 2 cents are worth (and really, that is all they are worth), I agree with some of the other posts regarding taking a step back.
I think everyone is in agreement that the environment should be a top priority for hotel and traveler alike, no matter what the country. But seriously, can we as the travelers ever really know how any given hotel (FS or family-run inn) impacts the environment? A family-run hotel that pours cleaning chemicals into groundwater can have more of an "impact" than a larger hotel that complies with environmental regulations. I personally think people, myself included, need to be careful before passing judgment on any establishment.
As for the whole FS vs. local hotel debate, I also think everyone would agree that our travel experiences are what we choose to make them. One learns and participates in local cultures, even if the local "culture" is another big city, to the extent one decides to. I frankly believe hotel choice has nothing to do with it. Therefore, I believe we all need to be careful that we don't pass judgment on people based upon the fact that they stay at a given establishment. Fourth-grade judgments of "you can't afford to stay here" or "you're a snob for staying there" are simply juvenile.
We've all run into the lazy, arrogant, narrow-minded, disrespectful traveler just about everywhere, from everywhere, and in all types of hotels. They're frustrating and you just want to slap them and pack them back up on a plane. Unfortunately, we can't do that so all we can do is try to "teach" by example. I sense that maybe this is what this whole thread is really about.

I haven't read such holier-than-thou crap in a long time. Simply put it is the same old shtick. The "elitest" versus the "real people" who just want to do the right thing. Let me tell you I have seen some of the worst examples of "American tourism" from the very people you all claim to be on this post. Just because we choose to stay at the FS does not make us to be anything more or less than the person who stays at Motel 6. People need to get over themselves.
