why lake titicaca? very scenic, or historical?

It's beautiful, but there are certainly more beautiful places and lakes in the world. In my opinion the surrounding altiplano area is more fetching than the lake itself. There is a bit of history there on the Peru side (islands of Uros, towers of Silustani) as well as the Bolivia side (Islands of the Sun & Moon have Inca ruins).

Also... Tiwanaku ruins, Copacabana in Bolivia...which are near Lake Titicaca.
Ray and I make our first trip in Feb. I'll post a trip report when you get back. We've been to Peru before and I will certainly second what Heather said about the antiplano being quite beautiful. The Andean lakes in this setting are simply spectacular.

I visited the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca last August, after a 10 day trip to Peru. Titicaca's expansiveness is an incredible thing to experience. We went to The Island of the Sun, to sacred sites and ruins and also to Tiwanaku - which is an amazing ruin. There is a stark beauty to the Altipano. I was more moved by Bolivia than Peru and highly recommend seeing Lake Titikaka.
