Why is Caye Caulker Boring?

Reading posts here, some people think Caye Caulker is boring. We are considering this place for a week in April. It looks appealing to us because it is not a major tourist destination and supposedly not over run by resorts. But if it's boring, maybe we should skip it. We like to snorkel, swim, kayak, read, sleep, eat. What does Ambergris or Placencia offer that Caulker does not?

I haven't been to Caulker but it has a huge following on the Belize Forum. I'm writing because "one man's ceiling is another man's floor": what is boring to one because there's little shopping or no casino is peaceful and laid back and divine to another. Keep us posted!

I like Caulker, but wouldn't spend a week. As far as I know, the only real swimming is at the split, and the current can be nasty.

Moving around Belize is pretty easy, book yourself a couple nights on Caulker, if you like it, stay longer, if you don't, head somewhere else.

What Ambergris and Placencia offer are better beaches. Ambergris has more restaurants, more hotels, and, with that, more people. Also, live music somewhere every night.

CC is Ambergris 20 plus yrs ago. Less developed, appeals towards more to moderate to budget travelers. Offers the same water and access to minland day trips. You can kayak, swim., snorkel, read. sleep. eat and visit Mayan sites, go river cave tubing or zip lining on teh mainland. You won't be bored.

Stay on Ambergris and take a day trip to Caye Caulker...Not a very big town - not many shops. If you stay out of town on Ambergris you will love it.

You can go through and shop at every store on Caye Caulker in half an hour.

I prefer Caye Caulker. It's small and laid back.

We spent 5 days there (Iquana Reef) and really enjoyed it. We did go to Amebergris twice (once with a small group and once as part of a snorkel trip) but prefer Caulker. There was plenty of variety in places to eat. We swam at the Split and walked around quite a bit.

That said, Elvi's on Ambergris has the best ceviche I've ever had. I go thru withdrawl every time I think about it... handmade chips and a beer and I'm all set.

It's not that it is boring, there just isn't very much there. You really can walk the entire main drag in just a few minutes. When I was there, I saw a lot of natural, hippy types just hanging out. Didn't seem like there were many day trips or activities offered.

San Pedro is a small, upbeat beach town with lot of little restaurants, shops and local families bopping around. It has a very positive feel to it and you can choose to stay in a busy area or a very remote area. Many businesses close early so you won't find all that many late night party crowds.

I'm sure you'd enjoy either location. It is very beautiful.

Just a note... there are plenty of places to book day trips from Caye Caulker (whether snorkeling, scuba, fishing, or going inland)... we had no issues... in fact, for snorkelling, it worked out better because there were far fewer people in our group than those going out from Ambergris.

I don't think that it is boring at all. You can relax or have as much adventure as you want. There are a ton of places that offer tours (water and land). You can also take kayaks to the north side of the island and swim there.
I was there in January, only planning to stay for 3 nights, ended up staying 7 and I am actually going back in a week because I had such a great time!
