Which beach location in Brazil

We are planning a holiday in Brazil this May. We plan a few days in Rio before going on to visit the falls & then we would like to spend a week to 10 days at a beach location but we have no idea which 1. We would like a nice beach & up market hotel.
Also can anyone tell me what the weather is like in May?
Thanks

IMO a week to 10 days in one beach location is too much time. Travelling from RIO by private buses to different destinations is simple and very confortable. You may use RIO as your base city and start from there. Places with beaches that i recommend are:
PARATY
Porto de Galinha
Florianapolis
BUZIO, never been to but heard it is incredible.
Fortaleza
Do a google of BRASIL

This is for the southern hemisphere
DEC 21- MAR 21 SUMMER
MAR21 - JUN 21 FALL
JUN 21 - SEP 21 WINTER
SEP 21 - DEC 21 SPRING,
RIO should be really pleasent in May, maybe some of the locations down south the weather will be little bit chilly, specially at night time....water sure is somehow cooler the closer you are to the south pole.

Well there are at least 23 ifferent beaches in Buzios so if you tried a different one everyday you still would not have seen them all. Very nice pousadas in Buzios the last one I stayed in was the Colonna park and I thought it was very nice. If I had 10 days to spare I would stay there in a heartbeat.

Rio is absolutely amazing. For a combination of completely calm and temptingly exotic beaches try Angra dos Reis. 365 islands with even more beaches and countless undiscovered little gems are perfect for total relaxation time. I lived in Angra for 5 months... In May it's still quite warm, but some days might be a little cool for going in the water, etc. You'll love Rio! Have fun!

Thanks everybody. I have since checked out the climate charts in May for the Fortaleza & Bahia areas & the weather seems to be terrible, so Im now definitely looking at Buzios although there doesn't seem to be agreat choice of 1st class hotels.

Clark, I don't know what your idea of a first class hotel is but Buzios has many nice pousadas. They are more smaller type hotels some with only a couple of rooms and the biggest with maybe 30 to 50 so you will not find anything here on the scale of Vegas for example there are no Bellagios or MGM Grand's here just little nice pousadas. Recently I stayed at the Colanna park on Sao Fernandes beach and the Casa Branca near downtown, in my view they are top and first class for Buzios. I would think the weather would be about 80 degrees on average every day which is nice.

Weather in the South is better than Northeast in May. May not be as hot but would certainly be less humid (it is rainy season there). There is a very exclusive small resort near Florianopolis called Ponta dos Ganchos, but I think you might find 10 nights too much in any place by the beach. I would suggest you spend a few days in Buzios once you leave Rio ( 4 nights?) I suggest the Casas Brancas, a boutique hotel with amazing views. Then Iguazu, then finish up in Ponta dos Ganchos for total relaxation. I have been to both places and they are the best in each region. I booked through Journey Latin America in the UK, but you can also check out www.brazilecojourneys.com as they specialise in the South.
