Where to stay in SLP & Zacatecas

Planning a trip to Mexico this winter and am looking for charming places to stay for a few nights in San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas. Any suggestions would be appreciated

We plan to rent a car at the airport in Leon. Will that be a problem?

From the very detailed driving directions published by Casas de San Miguel and copied by many others "...100 miles from Matehuala ... "Cuota" sign to Queretaro and Mexico. It will say only "Cuota Queretaro". There is only one sign, it comes on quick on you so be very alert and take it. You have only one shot; otherwise you'll go shooting off into SLP... que le vaya bien! Don't screw this one up!! Also, the cops around SLP are on the take. Don't let them stop you. They will hold you up for ransom and amke you pay them dinero". Those are quotes.

Appreciate the warning, but I am a bit confused. Are you talking about not driving in the entire state of San Luis Potosi? Or is this warning for the Capital city, San Luis Potosi? Could u pls. provide more information on the detailed driving directions u are referencing--what is this and where could I purchase it? thank you.

The city of SLP: the route is for the bypass East of the city.
The maps are copies from the Guia Roti "Por las Carreteras de MX".
The comments are the "owners" and have been reproduced (I got a copy from a friend in Austin), but Are not commercially available to my knowledge.

Thanks -- so obvioulsy you're suggesting that going into the city may not be a good idea or to be careful vis a vis driving in the city? In the past we've driven around Mexico a fair amount and had only one bad experieince with the police. But even that turned out ok, after sweating it out with what they would do.

I think a MX registered rental would be fine. I have not had a single problem (I drive moderate amounts in the states of GTO and QRO).

sounds like that would do it! Again appreciate the insider's tip - we'll be careful rental car and all.
