where to stay in Buenos Aires
 

Hi,
I am going to Buenos Aires in Mid January. I was just wondering what part of the city is the best to stay in from a tourist perspective ???

Any help would be appreciated

I kist stayed in the Recoleta area and was very happy I did. Found it very convenient and as a solo traveler felt very safe there.

Recoleta is very nice, with beautiful parks, museums and a lot of the popular tourist attractions.. as well as some very nice hotels.
Palermo and all the little Palermos is also a great area to stay in.. plenty of nightlife, cafes etc as well and parks.
Wherever you stay, be sure you have air conditioning !
Summer has started out quite hot .. and today is steamy.

Recoleta, is the traditional choice, Palermo is a trendier choice. Las Canitas is up and coming on the lodging stakes as is Belgrano.
All are considered 'safe'.

San Telmo is also trendier than Recoleta and maybe slightly edgier than Palermo, it is close to the city centre but looses out on the 'green spaces' the other mentioned areas have access to.

Nearly forgot, Puerto Madero has a couple of expensive hotels; if you want charm and no traffic noise with city centre at walking distance, this is also an option.

My own preference is Las Canitas my least favourite is the city centre.

I think beccapax says it best -- pick the area that best suits your style. We've stayed in Recoleta, Palmero Soho and San Telmo and they all have a very different vibe as eveyone has described. I havent stayed in, but really liked Las Canitas - it seemed less crowded, lovely trees, nice shops and lots of restaurants to choose from. Taxis are relatively inexpensive in BA and its pretty easy to go from one area to another albeit with a lot of traffic sometimes. It's also a great city to walk in although I would imagine rather hot in Janaury.
