Just try to find a place on the Copacabana beach to see the fireworks. You will be surrounded by two more million people doing the same thing.

jfcarli,

That's what I'm afraid of! Not good with crowds, but husband LOVES them. Is it possible to see anything from one of the hotels on the beach?

I spent one New Year's at the Copacabana Palace. They have a wonderful New Year's Eve Party and their large terrace overlooking the beach is open so that you can see the fireworks, etc. without being in the crowd. It was great!

Any hotel in front of the beach (Av. Atlantica) will do. That includes the Copacabana Palace. But make sure you reserve an apartment with front to the beach. You should, however, book reservations WAY AHEAD (talking of months in advance) and probably have to put some cash off front for that type of reservation.

Rio alone should be worth a few days. Short trips could include Cabo Frio, Buzios, Saquarema, Petropolis, Teresópolis.
