Where should we stay? Playa or Cancun hotel district??

I was at the Royal Playa del Carmen. I did a trip report on it. Very nice resort, but I think we will go for non AI next time to sample some of the great restaurants unless I get an even better deal at the Royal and just pay some extra to eat out at night.

PLAYA, no question and in fact skip the 400 room AI's and look at Shangri La Caribe on the beach in Playa but at the end of a road 5-10 minute walk to town,Fifth Avenamely,bars,clubs,resturants. Bkfst and dinner included and wonderful.Alcohol not but after 8 days of mucho Cuban rum and diet cokes, bar tab was $212.00 for us,please
