Where does the bottle water in Mexico come from?
When in Cancun or Cozumel - how do I know the bottled water is safe? Where does it come from?
|
Geez, just look on the label! You can trust the bottled water there just like you can trust it in the US or wherever you're from. You probably won't stray too far from the resort, will you?. A little gastrointestinal discomfort never hurt anyone, anyway.

I have often wondered the same thing. Is even the bottled water safe? Friends after returning from Cancun spent several days in bed. So it does make a difference.

Hi. Just home from Cancun. In our very modern hotel they sold Evian or their own bottled water in the hotel store. I boughtthe Evian to be on the safe side, but to be honest by the end of the week we were drinking water from the tap with no after effects at all. Even tasted better than our water here; less chlorine.
Don't be too paranoid in Mexico. They are very familiar with water concerns and don't want the tourists to be sick. Have fun.
Most of the water in large towns is alright. It has to be because you don't see people dropping like flies. When you get out of major towns start drinking bottled water becuase most of the water supply comes from wells which can or are contaminated by livestock. I drank the tap water in Puerto Vallarta all of last month with n ill effects. Have a great trip - Dennis

Dennis:

Your statement is not totally correct. It is true that the tap water in Puerto Vallarta is relatively safe. However that is unique to Puerto Vallarta. With very few exceptions, the tap water is NOT safe in other cities in Mexico.

I would not be concerned with the bottled water. It is safe for consumption. Many of the larger resort hotels have their own water purification systems so you can use the tap water at the resort.

We've just returned from two weeks in Guadalajara. Great place to visit! Re: bottled water -- most large hotels and restaurants use purified water or provide bottled water for drinking. We've found this to be the case in Cancun, Oaxaca, and other locations as well. One clue to watch for is the ice cubes; if they're cylindrical with a hole through them, they're made with purified water. If you do, however, have stomach problems, suggest using GatorAid to help you get back on track.
