Where can I buy waterproof shorts?
Hi, guys! I was interested in buying some waterproof shorts to wear when we go rafting. I know I've seen them online, but I can't remember where. Does anyone know an online source where I could order some or a store that would carry them? Maybe waterproof isn't the correct word, more like swimsuit material. Thanks for any help you can provide!

I buy nearly all that kind of stuff @ REI.

REI, LLBean, Lands End would have the shorts you need. They aren't really waterproof but are made with nylon and dry quickly when wet. Because they are a lighter material they are much more comfortable than cotton shorts, particularly when rafting. I have some Columbia shorts that I probably bought at Dick's sporting goods that are perfect for what you need. They have zippered pockets that are also made of netting so they drain quickly. Bring freezer zip lock bags to put stuff in before putting it in your pockets. They work great on the river. A baseball cap is good to wear under your helmet. Again, a nylon one would be best. enjoy, it is one of my favorite things to do in CR.

Thanks, guys - what would I look under if I'm searching online? Would it be board shorts?

volcanogirl Jun 10th, 2009 10:09 AM

Suzie, I meant to ask you about the baseball cap - is that just for sun protection?

Suzie2 Jun 10th, 2009 11:19 AM

It helps with sun in your eyes and helps to keep a little of the rain out of your face should it start raining. Cushions the helmet too. Years ago when we first started rafting they wouldn't allow sunglasses so I got used to wearing the ball cap.

some of the companies call that type of clothing tropic wear. I'll try a few things for you to see what works as far as finding them. Hopefully my internet connection will hold out. Not terribly reliable in our area of CR.

REI has some really nice ones for around $30. They offer sun protections as well.
Just search for Sandy river cargo shorts or just type in water shorts.
Happy shopping

vg - also check out Sierra Trading Company. Sometimes hard to find what you want in your size but they usually have a decent selection.

Thanks for all the help, guys - this is exactly what I'm looking for.

Another question - what do you call that string you can attach to your sunglasses, the one that goes around your neck so you don't lose them in the water? I'd like to get one of those too.

A sunglass strap or neck cord.

Patagonia shorts:

I just bought a couple pairs on-line at REI outlet for like $22 or something. They fit pretty good.

Croakies! Thats it!

Here are my favorite online outlets:

I'm relieved to read it wasn't really waterproof shorts you were wanting, though I found those quite a few places when my babies wore cloth diapers 20+ years ago. :P

volcanogirl Jun 11th, 2009 09:14 AM

Thanks again, guys. I'm going to have fun checking these out. We do have an REI near us, so I'll swing by there too.

Croakies - I never would have thought of that on my own!

volcanogirl Jun 12th, 2009 07:06 PM

Well, we went to REI, and I found two cute pairs of water shorts. One was from Columbia and the other by Royal Robbins. Very comfortable, and they have zippered pockets. Also got a couple of pairs of Croakies for our shades. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction!

Just got an Eddie Bauer catalog - Amphib Shorts are on sale for $20:

volcanogirl Jun 15th, 2009 06:39 AM

We were at Target this weekend and saw some for men as well - 18 bucks which isn't bad.

volcanogirl Jun 30th, 2009 12:11 PM

hopeful, I was at Eddie Bauer this weekend; they have a really cute selection - pink, Hawaiian print, etc.

hopefulist Jun 30th, 2009 03:54 PM

Their stuff is really well made and they have great customer service, too.

I was at Dick's Sporting goods last weekend and they had a lot of that type of clothing for women--cute Nike stuff!
