What's your favorite way to spend a day in/near San Jose?

Just curious about what your favorite things to do in and near San Jose are - We've already done Poas Volcano, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and Doka Coffee Estate tour. Any other ideas? Has anyone visited the Else Kientzler Botanical Gardens? Thanks for your help!

vgirl, if you haven't been, do a daytrip to Irazu, Lankester Gardens, and Orosi Valley--beautiful!

VG,
If you are interested in Else Kientzler, I would just stop on the way up to Arenal, wouldn't make a separate trip. They get very few visitors, aren't well known, were surprised to see us although we had contacted them beforehand. There are some interesting plants, but honestly, I enjoyed the lush landscaping at many of our hotels more.

Have you thought about the Cachi/Orosi Valley area/Irazu Volcano or even a trip up to Tirimbina or La Selva around the Sarapiqui region?

Looks like great minds think alike! Did you guys drive yourselves or go with a tour? We never rent a car, so I'd love recommendations on who to tour with. I've seen Irazu pics, and it looks similar to Poas and very pretty.

Hi, I've actually written a post about 5 fun things to do in San Jose. Since you've done so many fun stuff you can try these.

http://www.travelexperta.com/2009/04...-san-jose.html

I've been to Else Kientzler Botanical Gardens. They're nice. However, they are about 1 hour drive out. And there is nothing around them, so you can't take a bus or walk from anywhere in particular.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, Marina, I will check out your list! I think based on what you guys have said that I'm going to pass on the botanical gardens.

VG,

We were with our Tico friends, so we weren't driving on this part of our trip. You would probably be best off hiring your driver for one additional day or seeing if your hotel has daytrips that go to this area.

Hey vgirl,

I've also done the Orosi/Irazu/Lankester day trip and enjoyed it.

On my to-do list:
The Serpentarium in Alajuela

The Rainforest Aerial Tram on either the Pacific or Atlantic side

San Lorenzo Canopy Tour (I heard it has some of the longest cables among the operators.)

Las Pumas Rescue Shelter in Canas (Although Las Pumas might be a bit of haul from San Jose.)

I also meant to visit INBioparque but ran out of time but I will the next time I'm in CR.

ATV tours

vgirl, any hotel you choose in the SJ area will offer a tour to Orosi with the other things included. It's a full day. I would think if you'd prefer a private driver, the hotel would arrange that for you as well. I know Orquideas would, bet Grano de Oro would as well. I think you'd enjoy it. It's just a matter of looking and enjoying, certainly nothing adventurous, but such a nice part of the country.
