whats next, after loving Costa Rica?

After 2 fabulous CR adventures, including BDC 2x, surfing near Banana Azul, and a surf shack in Dominical, AOL with spectacular views of Arenal and lava...and Oscar to share it all as our driver, we are ready for another destination. The CR Fodors regulars are well versed travelers. Please advise:
17 yr old son gets grad gift trip, about a week long, prob over the holidays unfortunately. He loved CR but wants snorkeling, ruins, some beach time. Family of 5 "adults" so budget is an issue, especially airfare these days. Where would the CR pros send us next? Belize, guatamala, honduras...we don;t like the Americanized areas as much, and Peace Lodge, though looked lovely, was way over the top for us.
Thanks for thoughts and recommendations...

We're going to the Yucatan for all the reasons you mentioned. We're just going to minimize our time in Cancun, because that is so not our scene. I'll report back, but we're not going until the end of June so that doesn't help you.

I would suggest Belize - it has all of what your son is looking for - snorkeling, ruins, beaches. We loved CR when we went in 2006 and ended up going to Belize in 2008 and really enjoyed it as well. For a nice split of time I would do 3 nights inland in San Ignacio (we loved Black Rock Lodge) and 4 nights on one of the Cayes or Placencia. We did find it a touch more Americanized than CR, especially on Ambergris Caye, but not to the point where it felt too developed.

I've had my eye on Belize too - for inland time, you might also consider Chan Chich, supposed to be very similar to BdC.

I think you were the Fodor friend who recommended Banana Azul? Maybe not, but I know we chatted last time I went to CR in Jan 08, so thanks once again. Chan Chich almost looks TOO nice! Tablecloths!?

And I know there is no other like BdC!

We've been to CR twice and to me it's an ideal vacation spot...but I do love to try new destinations. We're heading to Belize this summer. The ruins are definitely what is calling to me there. And the snorkeling too. I don't think it will have the wildlife or lushness of CR, but I'm really looking forward to this trip. We're splitting our time between Chaa Creek, inland and Portofino on Ambergris Caye.

Hi, you know what's an underrated surf location, with very few people and amazing surf. Plus, they have the best Mexican ruins, in my opinion and gorgeous Colonial towns:
Guatemala

Your son will love it!

Hope this helps

Shell, I can't wait to hear about your trip! We always think about straying from CR, but we haven't done it yet.

Belize is moving up the list for us as well. Sigh. So many places and not enough time and funds!

4explore -- I think I recommended Banana Azul to you. You ended up staying there, right? I hear they recently put in a pool!
