What to wear/do in Buenos Aires???
 

I am going to BA next month (their summer time). I want to dress comfortably in the day, but also don't want to look like a typical tourist, or like an American. What is good and practical to wear during daytime excursions? Do the men wear hats at all? If so, what kind? Does wearing shorts or jeans automatically signal you as a tourist?

Shopping: Can you haggle with the local vendors and merchants for prices? Is it better to take the subway vs. taking a taxi to see the sights?

wear casual clothes. summer is hot and people try to be comfortable. we dont wear hats but we if you feel like doing it it is ok. Sandals, Tshirts.etc.
Haggle prices is ok when you see sth is too expensive., dont find it correct when people haggle and know they are paying nothing. I do it myself but never when i know it is the right price and sb is working honestly.
It is like taking advantage and nobody likes that.

When we were in Buenos Aires, the hawkers on the street would call out to us in English- they knew we were from America by the way we dressed and carried ourselves. White tennis shoes, polo shirts and shorts will tell them you are American.

Though looking or acting American will not to a disadvantage at all in BA.

Subway....The subway is near some sites, not others...The subway is very cheap, but taxis are not very expensive either....if you are located near Line D on the Subway, it will take it to the last stop--Catedral-- and you will be near Plaza de Mayo and other downtown sites. There is not a subway near the Recoleta Cemetary, so take a cab (depending on your hotel, it probably won't cost more than 2-3dollars).....

Jeans are ok, better if fashionable
Shorts!!!, better bermudas for guys.
designer sneakers are ok, tennis shoes are ok too
t-shirts if nice are ok...
it is about behaving not about dressing. locals know who is a tourist and they do not care or will bother anyone.....
