What to pack for San Miguel?
 

We are planning to spend a week in San Miguel October 10 thru 17. Any suggestions re what to pack would be appreciated. Shorts in the datime? Pants and a jacket in the evenings? Any help will be appreciated. eb from Texas

Pack all your fancy clothes . . . every American we saw in San Miquel de Allende was dressed to the hilt . . . think foo-foo garden party.

I guess you can tell we didn't much enjoy SM.

You really don't have to get dressed up in San Miguel. You can go totally casual or dress up. With the exception of the restaurant at Casa Sierra Nevada, I can't think of anywhere else that has a dress code. It may be a bit chilly, especially in the evenings, so make sure you bring along sweaters and light jackets. Also, very comfortable sturdy shoes for lots of walking on the cobblestone streets.

I stopped posting on Fodor's for a while because when I gave an opinion, I was slammed . . . I thought giving one's opinion was what this forum is all about . . . guess I'm wrong.

It appears that if I don't agree and love every place that others do then I should not be posting.

It just takes a while to learn all the rules around here.

Sandy-don't get all touchy! You have several posts here that are all complaining about the same thing about SMA.
Relax, it was said with a smile because even you said that we can realize that you don't like SMA.
BTW-those who DO like San Miguel might have felt that your foo foo garden party remark was a bit of "slamming" also.

I could understand your response Scarlett if I kept beating the dead horse in the same thread, which I did not. Eb asked a question, I answered with my opinion, you answered with yours; Kwil answered with hers (or his); that's what this forum is about.

And, BTW, insults that are made with smiley faces are passive-aggressive.

I am sorry that you took my response as an "insult" or that you think me "passive aggressive".
I guess this is a case of not being able to see the face or hear the tone, therefore reading your own tone into a response.
I don't know you, I have no reason to insult you. But I would offer some friendly advice, don't be so easily offended.

OK Scarlett, let's kiss and make up . . . kiss, kiss.

It's hard not to be touchy when I felt slammed here for posting a less than positive response and then slammed over on the Europe board for posting a positive one.

Let's all go back to our favorite pasttime . . . reading and talking about travel!

I usually take light cotton outfits that mix and match, loose trousers, long skirts, they are cool and also can go from day to night .
SMA is casual , some folks tend to dress more because that is just what they do wherever they are. But the majority are dress for comfort.

Thanks to all of you for your input and suggestions. And Sandy, thanks for sending me your journal about your trip to Oaxaca, to San Miguel, etc. It was very informative and helpful. I can tell from reading it that you and your friend are much more adventuresome than me, but I think that's great!!! (My bravest thing I've done lately was to be a PASSENGER on an ultralite in Cabo!:) + our Spanish is very limited, though we do try. Oaxaca sounds great and is now on my list of places to go in the future.
We do have our trip planned for San Miguel in October (staying in a small suite at Las Terrazas San Miguel), and the tips re what to pack are helpful. We definitely want to be comfortable and don't plan to go anywhere too dressy...just want to be laid back! Thanks to all....any any other tips will be appreciated!!! We love Mexico and the Mexican people! eb from Texas

Thanks EG . . . and don't worry that your Spanish is limited, the Mexican people are very appreciative about any attempt to speak Spanish . . . and they are helpful, too. How many Texas taxi drivers do you know who can correct your grammar . . . all the Mexicans did and I was happy that they would help me.

I, too, LOVE Mexico and the people. Have a terrific trip (and don't miss the tour of homes on Sundays in San Miguel).

forgive my ignorance, but what are 'light cotton outfits'? i hear this term quite a bit on fodors but i have no idea what a 'light cotton outfit' is. it brings to mind my pajamas but i'm sure that's not what the poster meant. could someone be more specific please?

An outfit= a shirt/top with pants/skirt
made of light weight cotton, usually 100 % cotton.
