What is going on Christmas Day
 

I will be in Buenos Aires on Christmas - any recommendations on what to do or activities in the city

is it celebrated mostly at home or will there bemany events?

IN Argentina, Christmas is not the major holiday it is elsewhere. Traditionally, January 6 is the time for gifts. It is a holiday, of course, but the family dinners are late on Christmas Eve and many go to midnight mass. No one will be up much before early afternoon. It is a quiet day.

Toid : I do not agree with you I thinking is it a mayor holiday, may be what you mean is that people do not give presents to each other? On that I agree some families give presents onChristmas eve others of the Night of the 5 th. of January when the Wise Kings brought presents to the Baby JEsus...but Christmas it is a main holiday in the hearts of many, many probably the great mayority of Argentineans, Argentina is mainly a Catholic country and churches are full on the night of 24 th December at Midnight MAss.
Everybody wishes Feliz Navidad, and people thanks God ! do it a natural way, in my opinion the political correctness that has done so much harm to us has not reached them yet.

I will also be arriving in BA on Christmas morning and have the same questions as kittycatangel.

When you say it's a quiet day, will there be any cafes or restaurants open for dinner that night or is everything pretty much shut down? I suppose the hotel restaurants must be open at least?

I don't mind walking around a quiet city if most shops and attractions are closed, but I just want to make sure we don't starve! Thanks for any advice.

I am sure you will not starve.Buenos Aires is full of restaurants and many will be open. Going to a Church is awesome even if you are not Catholic many Argentineans are the mass that particular day is sang and touching. You will be welcome and you can pray any way you feel like , deep in your heart any way you believe. It is so much a part of Argentina that it is worth it I believe. Or you can go there for part of the mass. THe church in Recoleta is charming not very big not very small, ...
