Weather in Argentina in Oct?
 

I'm doing some daydreaming here and will have some time to travel in the last 2 weeks of October.
One of my dreams is to see Argentina. Would this be a good time to visit, or would it be best to leave it for another time when the weather might be better?
I'd like to visit BA as well as Bariloche and El Calafate.

Early spring weather is what I have been told to expect. I am going in November and have received much advice that the weather will be nice and the crowds manageable in Bariloche. Check the posts for AVRooster and Drdawggy on this board and on trip advisor for some excellent counsel about Argentina. I know after all that I have read the hardest part of the trip will be waiting to go! Buen viaje.

cmcfong, thanks so much. I just wasn't sure if it would be too early in the spring. I'll certainly take your advice and read lots of posts by the the 'experts'.

Kodi, if even a third of what they say is so...Argentina is a fantastic destination!

It's definately near the top of my list. I really want to visit Argentina. Unfortunately I think I'll have to wait for another year, til Oct 2007. But I certainly can have fun learning alot in the next year. There will be so much I want to do.
I wonder how long the ideal vacation would be? I'm not sure if the usual two weeks will do it. Three? four? I have lots of time to plan.

It does sound wonderful. After reading about the distances and choices I think the ideal trip would include a three to four week stay with Buenos Aires, the Falls, Bariloche, El Cafate, Usuahai and Puerto Madryn on the itinerary. Then ideally, you would go back the next year and do everything else!

I agree. A three week minimum trip sounds good, with 4 weeks being even better. So much to dream about...and plan.

My husband wants to go right now, but there is the small matter of a Pup sitter and weather..so I think November would be good. We can celebrate our 101st wedding anniversary there :D

Scarlett, I'll have to follow along with your plans and see what you decide to do. I'm getting way ahead of myself, but already, I'll be waiting for a trip report!

I'm so lucky I have a reciprical agreement with my friends for doggie sitting. We always look after each others' dogs and always coordinate our vacations to make sure we don't overlap. In fact, I'm leaving this morning, my little dalrling and I are going to my friends' to sit for a couple of days. My little one loves the time to play with the 'big' guys. Good luck finding a good sitter. Too bad I wasn't closer!

I think I would love pupsitting for a beautiful chocolate Standard poodle. He looks to be quite the charmer. DH hates the prospect of ten hours in an airplane, so I have the dogsitting taken care of for this trip.

It is more difficult now to find a new pupsitter because we have not lived here very long..but I have ideas!! lol...

Hotel question..
do you know where you want to stay yet?
I found two places that sound good, thanks to a friend, I know that we should stay in the Microcentro..so does anyone know about the Melia Buenos Aires Boutique Hotel? and what about the American Buenos Aires Park Hotel? and one more, the Crillon? ( I have visions of the Paris hotel ) :)

Why did your friend suggest the microcenter? I stayed in the microcenter on my last trip, but there are other areas that most vacationers find more desireable--Recoleta and Palermo Soho or Palermo...and San Telmo is gaining in popularity.

Did you look at the options in your price range suggested by the Economist City Guide, which is linked on another thread? There are some good choices listed there....

About the Crillion. I think it is being or has been purchased by one of the chain hotels, so it may be getting a face lift...but it has been a tired, sad hotel crying out for restoration.

The others have been around for some time....and there are lots of reviews around....check out Trip Advisor for consumer reviews.

Some other downtown hotels for you to consider:

Esplendor. Noise can be a factor here, but if you get a quiet room this is a great location and the hotel has recently been redecorated.
NH Latino.
Elevage. Nicer than the Crillion
Claridge.

None of these hotels cost any more than the Melia, the nicest of the hotels on your short list.

I had originally thought staying in Recoleta or Palermo would be nice, a step out of the tourist action/crowds. But then she made me rethink being in an area where I would have to travel each day back to the Microcentro to be in the thick of things..I am still not sure of distances etc.
I am plodding my way through Frommers, learning, getting an idea of what is what, neighborhood-wise..it is very interesting but confusing.
I need more time .. and I am impatient..I want to go now lol..

Scarlett, I picked Recoleta, but I think I would have been just as happy in Palermo (a bit edgier, more hip). It is an exciting destination, isn't it?

We have been stuck in with storms today so the Yankee and I browsed Craigslist and a BA apt site, omigod, I am ready to just move there now lol.
I like the Recoleta and Palermo neighborhoods from what I have seen of them ( photos) and descriptions.
I did read today that the Microcentro is bad for exhaust fumes...anyone notice it being that bad?

If your friend from TA has the initials RR as her screen name, she has a lot of credibility! But on this issue, I disagree with her. I enjoy peaceful walks in the evening and the street life that is present in neighborhoods. All of this is sadly missing in the downtown area.

Taxis are plentiful and cheap, so getting to/from tourist attractions is simply not that big a deal in my opinion.

Anyway, half the fun is planning.....glad to see you have started early.
