Thanks again drdawggy. Think we will enjoy dinner at the Carlos Gardel tango show, and avrooster, that's a great website. It's a much bigger theater than I expected. Any small tango shows you could also recommend?

Brahmama, I am going to repack for the third time. Too bad you aren't traveling to BA in Nov. Think we could have fun. We are hoping to meet someone I met on Fodors in Mendoza.

Happy Trails, from another Carol

Granny - Carol
I just read on another thread that you are leaving tomorrow for Bs As! I didn't realize that it was this soon. We just arrived back from Boston about midnight last night and I haven't spent much time on the computer today. I did want to wish you a wonderful beautiful fantastic (etc etc) trip, so I hope that you do check out Fodor's once more before you leave!

I too am sorry we won't be there at the same time - I think we would probably have a great time - maybe get in a little trouble!

Post when you get back and tell our inquiring minds everything!

Vaya con Dios,

Carol (Brahmama type)

cmcfong,
Boston on the 13th! We returned last night from Boston Logan, but really spent very little time in the town itself.

We rented a car there (from Enterprise, what a deal) and then drove immediately to Portsmouth, NH, about an hour and 20 minutes. We stayed right across the river in Kittery, Me for the first 3 nights and then ended up at a house party with 10 people at a town 40 miles west of Boston.

It was a fun time at a very nice and very old house which was interesting, but it's nice to be back home so I don't have to smile and be cheerful everything single minute!

You will soon see for yourself, but the foliage is superb. Take a camera. Have a great time, and don't forget to sample the lobster rolls if you find a likely place.

Carol

I was just printing out our boarding passes and thought I would give one last look at Fodors to see what's new.

Thanks for your good wishes Brahmama. We have been very lucky on our travels and have had many good times, and come home with great memories. Sometimes it's the people we have met that inspire the best memories. We've visited people in Florida, we met in Croatia. Then we've had people visit us that we met in Hungary. A gal from England, who grew up in Argentina, inspired this trip. And, we are to meet a couple from the east coast that I met on Fodors, in Memdoza. Anyhow, we'll be in Buenos Aires Friday, and it can't be too soon for me!

Brahmama: Yes, we really enjoyed Rio Alba, ate there twice, as we were staying just a block away. There were some tourists there, but not many. About three blocks away is Amistad, even more homey and local. Fine dinner with a bottle of wine was about $25 for the two of us.

try "el gallegos" its on honduras and bonpland. Its only open for lunch, but i had tallerines with estafado sauce for $7 pesos, with a beer my bill came to $12 and there was so much food i could not eat it all, they also do various parilla cuts and basic salads, its not smart and it full of taxi drivers and old men but the food was great, very traditional and all for less than u$4

We just spent 6 nights at Hot. Bobo:
Gardelito; El Trapiche; Cabernet in P. Soho and Il Monttello in La Boca were great.
We also liked Juana M between Recoleta and Plaza San Martin.

THis has been a very productive thread - thanks to all the great recommendations. Thanks to all, especially the last few - jeanfromboston, marksplace, and mikemo.

Mikemo, does this mean you are home? I'm looking forward to your trip report when you get it posted.

granny, I'm sure you aren't home yet, but can't wait to read your TR either.

ooh, MIkemo, out of the frying pan into the freezer, eh? Hope you took along lots of layers.
I was reading one of your posts on TA and noticed that you were planning an evening at Cafe Tortoni - for watching (participating?) Tango and having a meal.

I am very interested in how that turned out? Did you go and if so, would you recommend this venue?

I liked the sound of it because it wasn't at a Tango show with 500 - 1000 other people and not a Vegas-style show which I didn't particularly want.

Also, did you get there by taxi? Any information and suggestions will be most appreciated

This is my 2nd time trying to post-- hopefully you won't get 2 responses from me.
We enjoyed a Tango show at Cafe Tortoni. As u say, it's a lot smaller venue and makes the experience more enjoyable I think. We saw several tango shows while in BA nad I think this was our favorite. The cost was about $2 with a recommended minimum. We ordered drinks and appetizers which were just okay. I think the 2nd show may be more fun. The MC chats up the audience for quite a bit and even engages them in song--pretty funny! We had our hotel make the reservation and get a taxi to and from Cafe Tortoni. I think because the hotel made the reservation we were seated right up front, pratically on the stage it seemed. The building and space is gorgeous--worth the trip in itself. Enjoy BA!

I just got back from BA this week and had several wonderful dining experiences.I guess I will say they were all wonderful but don't fit your $$$$ criteria but one Miranda in Palermo Hollywood. The food and menu were spectacular and fits your price. I don't know how anyone could even think of passing up dining in BA the food is better than Paris and 1/5 the price! Casa Cruz is are new fave right next to Aguilla y sol in Mexico city our second favourite

Took a taxi from Bobo to Cafe Tortoni.
Had no res, so I gave the honcho $10. pesos for 2 $30. peso pp front row seats.
Best if you understand Spanish.
Good Veggie tarte and small pizza with a $19. peso bottle of Malbec.
Fun evening and when the crowd found out we are from Mexico, we got a nearly standing ovation.

I think I have almost every meal planned out for my 3 weeks. However, since I will be in Bs As for Christmas will any restaurants be open that day? Also New Years day?

Scarlett,
Louisa loves the Las Moras Reserva Malbec. La Europea, a wine chain, just had a 3X2 deal - $59.pesos (about $5.25US).
In addition to the Montes Alpha Syrah, Cab, and Merlot purchased at the winery, we bought Mont Gras Res Syrah-Cab; Mont Gras Spec Sel Malbec and a hand written label single vineyard Sangiovese from Errazuriz's Maximiano vineyard in Aconcagua, Cl at the duty free leaving Santiago.
Oh, the great place in La Boca is Il Matterello - Av. Martin Rodriguez 517.
