I question the advice to take Cipro every day when you are not ill. Your body can become immune to it, when you really need it, it won't work. It is readily available in Mexico and much cheaper for me since I don't have good prescription insurance. I call it the wonder pill, you will feel better within the hour.

Lots of good advice here, but the food precautions can be stated very simply and thus easily remembered: Cook it, peel it, or dont eat it!

After a massive educational campaign, most hotels and restaurants now use purified water, even for the ice in your drink, and you dont really have to ask in the better places.

And finally, just say no to buffets. You are more likely to get ill from food that has been sitting out at a 4-star hotel than from a taco that you can see cooked in front of you by a street vendor.

Some people swear by acidophilus or Pepto Bismol, but I say "A margarita a day keeps the trots away." For the poster who takes a prophylactic dose of Cipro daily, I have no complaint if you are truly in need of it because you have increased health risks, but otherwise you are doing your species a great disservice. Overuse of antibiotics breeds drug-resistant bacteria, and we should all be very, very afraid of that. When you need that Cipro, it might not be effective.

We are planning our trip to Mexico, SMA and Guanajuato and this is one of my fears! So I asked my doc and he said he will give me Cipro to take IF I get sick. One pill should do it, a second one only if I am really sick. So I would think twice or at least talk to a doctor before taking them every day.
I got sick in Jamaica one year, and got sicker from drinking so much Peptol Bismal so you might want to go easy on that too~
That water parasite is an awful way to lose 10-20 pounds!
