Master Card is the card of choice in Latin America and the most widely accepted. Visa comes second and Amex in only a few places. NO DISCOVERY
US dollar is the unofficial currency in Latin America and even the little boys selling chewing gum in the streets take them. I am not exxagerating, everybody wants US dollars, due to the stability of dollars against latin currencies...not so in other part of the world...

Sure, everyone wants USDs, but you'll get screwed on the exchange rates paying in cash

Just returned yesterday from CR. We found Mastercard, Amex and Visa excepted readily. As per previous post Discover Card is unusable. We had no trouble using US dollars, however, you must be able to communicate in spanish that you know what the exchange rate is and if they can't honor it you won't do business with them. Obviously you do need to know what the rate is, and be able to do the math, in your head, on paper, or with a calculator. If your there for more than a few days it is bound to change slightly so be aware. Banks post official rates. We never got screwed, everyone wants US$$ they will comply, don't expect change to be issued in anything but colones. Best to you.
