Uruguay
My wife and I will be travelling to Buenos Aires and want to cross over to Uruguay, perhaps stopping at Colonia and other nearby cities accessible by bus. Any suggestions of cities to visit and special sites are appreciated. What about Montevedio?

When are you traveling, it does make a difference because some places are nicer in their Summer.
Colonia is a quaint, tiny, Colonial town. You can take the Buquebus, one hour, they have some tours that simplifies matters or you can go on your own. Montevideo I think merits also a short visit. This is the Capital city by the sea, offering nice walks . There is a lot to see . You should check one reputable guide book. I woudl sleep in Montevideo, there are many nice hotels and rates are very inexpensive. |
Uruguay is certainly worth a visit. Colonia is delightful...fun to walk, stay in historic hotels and eat in. Montevide also. I was there a few years ago and spent quite a bit of time in Colonia...

Another point...when you are in Colonia go out to Anchorena Park which is north west of the town. It is the location of the President's summer house and a quite beautiful location.

We get some Uruguay wine here in MX and it's mostly awful/rural plonk.

Where are you? in MExico I do not know which wine from Uruguay are you getting, the fact is that Uruguay has improved tremendously its wine production, winning many prizes in European Wine Fairs, they have a wine called I believe it is tanot, which is pretty good. Of course Uruguay cannot compare with the excellence of Chilean and Argentinean wines but they also have decent wines.

Thank you for your help

Hoyas:
We did the same few months ago and after our visit in Argentina, we took the ferry to colonia and picked out our rental car and spent the day in Colonia before driving to Montevideo.Visiting Uruguay is a must if you are already in Buenos Aires and even only for one day trip to Colonia. You will love Colonia. Montevideo has its own charm and we trully enjoyed it too. I am not sure how the weather will effect your trip now, during our trip it was warm and we enjoyed the beach activities. Punta Del este is very lovely but too crowded for my taste. Overall, it is very much possible(if you rent a car) to see Colonia, Montevideo, and Punta Del Este all in 4 to 5 days if you plan ahead .Have a great trip. |
